Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipMy name is Breanna Hiatt.
I work in the tutoring and mentoring program out of Russellville, Arkansas.
I chose to serve with AmeriCorps because I want to become a teacher.
I wanted to work with students more, get a little bit, get to know them a little bit more outside of the curriculum that I'm learning.
My name is Sharon Johnson and from Jonesboro, Arkansas.
I choose to serve to AmeriCorps because I wanted to serve my community.
My name is Kimberly Black.
I am an AmeriCorps member serving as a life coach at Crawford County Adult Education Center.
I decided to join AmeriCorps because I wanted to help people and serve my community.
My name is Michael.
And in AmeriCorps, I mentor pre-K students, the students that are before many of you when it comes to kindergarten, first, second, third and fifth grade.
I chose to serve in AmeriCorps because I wanted to do something that was not only bigger than myself, but something where I could see the impact that I make.
My name is Timothy Ingram, work for AmeriCorps in Russellville.
We are tutoring, mentoring program.
We tutor kids from grades three through 12th grade in all subjects that they're struggling with.
My name's Danielle Barney.
At AmeriCorps, I am so lucky to be on our mobile team with the Dream Center.
So I drive around, we feed kids, we get to hang out, just play games.
We do water days.
I get to spray kids with water, guns.
It's the most fun.
My name is Michael Freeman.
I serve at Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanas Camp as a counselor, I just love working with children.
I think that's a passion of mine.
In the program I am in, I can mentor the little children that I see every day.
I serve in a small town called Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and a school that has three kindergarten students.
Those students are from multiple backgrounds, racial, socioeconomics, which is just, they have parents that make a different amount of money.
They they dress differently.
There are different cultures.
Some people are from different nations.
The most rewarding part about serving with AmeriCorps is getting to know my students and celebrating their wins with them.
The most rewarding part for me is seeing the difference I'm making in the kids lives and being able to actually help them and just seeing them grow.
The most rewarding thing about serving in AmeriCorps is when I see the look on a student's face, where you can tell they did it, that you've helped them with something and it makes sense to them.
The most rewarding part about serving in AmeriCorps in my area is hearing my students say they want to go to college or they want to work in industry in our area.
We need more students, young students getting involved and staying in the community.
And so to hear that they want to stay in and work in manufacturing or go to college at ASU or not just ASU, ASU Newport.
So just wanted to know they want to go to college and they want to stay in the community, to give back to the community is great.
The most rewarding part about serving AmeriCorps is the experience and the skills that you learn and picked up along the way.
It really builds your character in a positive way.
Skills that I've learned through working through AmeriCorps is definitely a working with others, team building, like today.
Through AmeriCorps, I've learned skills such as teamwork, for example, what we're doing here today.
The activity that's going on behind me is zip lining, which is allowing us to kind of work with one another.
We did some teambuilding exercises earlier to help us build trust with one another, and we're getting to work with people from all over the state in AmeriCorps.
And with AmeriCorps being such a big program, you can serve with the Dream Center and hang out with kids.
You can teach adults, you can work at Our House.
You can work at summer camps, and you can really learn what you want your next step to be.
AmeriCorps has helped prepare me for my job as a teacher by giving me the skills that I need to communicate with parents and students.
It has helped me with my schooling.
The scholarship that I'm getting at the end of my term of service is going to pay for my final year of schooling.
I decided to go back to school to get my master's degree, and by serving in AmeriCorps, I got the money to to do that for free.
I would recommend you join AmeriCorps because you learn a whole lot of things, get to meet a lot of interesting people, and you're just going to have a great time AmeriCorps is the top when it comes to serving their communities, and that's what I've done for the past three years, is serve my community.
And I'm so glad I joined.
So I hope that you consider joining when you can.
There are so many different programs with AmeriCorps that you can work with, and even if you're not sure what you want to do, this helps you kind of build skills that could be applicable for all sorts of different jobs that you want to do, and you get to know a lot of people and have a lot of fun.
I mean, it's a great place.
I mean, if you really give it a try, I promise you it's worth the experience and worth your while.
Just remember that your experience is your own and you make it what you want it to be.
So if you want to serve in AmeriCorps, you can make it the best experience, not only for yourself, but for people that you work with and the people that you mentor.
AmeriCorps is awesome.
AmeriCorps is awesome.
