- Hi kids.

My name is Miss Bridget, and I'm here today at the Argenta Community Theater.

We're located in North Little Rock in the heart of the Argenta Arts District.

We are here to provide all aspects of theater to our community be it classes, plays, and one of the things we are most known for, which are musicals.

A musical is where a story comes to life on stage and contains three very important aspects: acting, singing, and dancing.

In order to be a part of a musical you have to go to something called an audition.

An audition is where you go in front of the creative team, which usually consists of the director, the music director, and the choreographer, and you showcase your talents and abilities so they can put you in whatever part or role they see fit.

At an audition, there are three things to expect for a musical: a scene or a side, a song to sing, or a dance.

Now, the first one is a scene, a side or a monologue.

A monologue is when one person does a speech for an extended period of time all by themselves.

A scene is where two people are on stage together and they're having a conversation.

So today we have Clark and Caleb who will show you what a scene is and how it would go in an audition.

- Hey, Ariel.

There you are.

- Just look Flounder.

The sun, the sand.

Isn't it the most beautiful place you've ever seen?

- I don't know, Ariel.

I don't think we should be up here.

- Oh, don't be such a guppy.

- A guppy?

I'm as brave as you are.

- What about sharks?

- Where?

(panting) - Oh, Flounder, you really are a guppy.

- I am not.

- Aw.

You'll never guess what I found today.

Look, have you ever seen anything more wonderful in your entire life?

- Cool.

What is it?

- I don't know, but I bet Scuttle will.

Come on.

I'll race you.

- Hey, wait for me.

(audience clapping) - Wasn't that amazing?

Scenes can be really fun, especially when you don't know who you might be doing the scene with.

Next component of our audition is a song.

Have any of you ever gotten up on stage and sung a song before?

I'll show you what it looks like.

Next, we have Reese who will perform a song that she would use in an audition.

♪ I've always been shy ♪ ♪ I confess it, I'm shy ♪ ♪ Can't you tell that this confident air ♪ ♪ Is a mask that I wear 'cause I'm shy ♪ ♪ And you may be sure ♪ ♪ Way down deep I'm demure ♪ ♪ Though some people I know might deny it ♪ ♪ At bottom I'm quiet and pure ♪ ♪ I'm aware that it's wrong to be meek as I am ♪ ♪ That chances may pass me by ♪ ♪ I pretend to be strong ♪ ♪ Though as weak as I am ♪ ♪ All I can do is try ♪ ♪ God knows I try ♪ ♪ Though I'm frightened and shy ♪ ♪ And despite the impression I give ♪ ♪ I confess that I'm living a lie ♪ ♪ Because I'm actually terribly timid ♪ ♪ And horribly shy ♪ (audience clapping) - Wow, Reese, that was awesome.

We've got one more component of our audition process for a musical theater production.

Can any of you guess what it is?

That's right.

It's a dance.

Next, we have Abbie, who will be dancing to a song from a musical just like you would at an audition.

- [Choreographer] A, 5, 6, 7, 8.

(upbeat music) (audience clapping) - Wow.

That was incredible, Abbie.

So now you have seen all three aspects of what make a musical a musical and how you would go about auditioning to be a part of one.
