Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.[MUSIC] JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: There're basically four types of deserts: hot and dry, cold, semi-arid, and coastal.
This time, we're talking about coastal deserts.
A coastal desert just doesn't seem like the other types of deserts.
They can have mild temperatures and are located along western coasts by the ocean.
But like other deserts, coastal deserts don't get much rainfall.
Fog from the ocean rolls over these areas but doesn't leave much moisture behind.
So, plants need to be able to store water.
The plants in a costal desert include buckwheat bush and rice grass.
Animals like coyotes, badger, snakes, and lizards, and birds like the great horned owl and eagles can be found in coastal deserts.
These animals are mostly nocturnal or sleep during the heat of the day and hunt for food at night.
Coastal deserts are threatened by humans using up their main sources of underground water and by climate change.
So, we need to do our part to save coastal deserts.
