Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Hi, everyone.
Welcome to the Amazeum, my name's Shelby Fleming.
I'm the exhibits technician here.
We're going to learn how to solder with my friends right here.
We're ready to get started?
- Yes, yeah.
- Cool.
And what we're going to do is we're going to have our solder, and what's our solder?
- It's metal - Solder is metal, yes.
And then what's going to happen to the metal when we add the heat?
- Melt it - It's going to melt it, yes!
And then what's going to happen once it's done being melted, and we pull the heat away?
- It's going to get hard - It's going to get hard.
It's perfect.
So we're going to add heat to our board.
- I want to see you do that.
- Yep.
- I think that's good.
- I'm going to keep adding solder and see how we made a big, a big little puddle?
- Ooh.
- Yeah.
So we have a little dab there and then we're going to make it hot again.
Hot, hot.
And then we're going to just dab it.
Yeah, there we go!
Okay.
We're going to check it.
Okay.
We're going to make sure that it was a good weld, and it's not going to pull off.
We're good, look at that.
So I'm tugging on it and it's not going anywhere.
That's a good weld.
let's rearrange a little bit and we're all going to try it.
Heat.
Solder.
Good, good.
Yep.
Now the next one.
Heat.
Solder.
There you go, perfect.
Next one.
Heat.
Solder.
Awesome, perfect.
Good job!
Yeah, good job!
(clapping hands) Good job.
Okay, so get your heat on it first.
Get lots of heat.
There you go.
Now little dab.
There you go.
Keep going.
Keep going.
Yeah.
That's good!
See we filled in the hole, so let's move to our next one.
Yeah, very good!
Yes!
(hands clapping) Perfect.
Awesome Okay, let's put it back in the holder.
Now let's take it off and see if we got it.
Yeah.
And then pull on it, little tug.
Yeah!
Survived the tug test.
- Yes.
(upbeat music) So if you put the tip there, yeah, there you go.
Get that hot and then touch it with your solder.
- Whoa.
- There you go.
Perfect.
That's good.
That's plenty.
And then we'll go to the other side.
I'll tilt a little bit, makes a little bit easier to get in there.
Good.
Perfect.
Then get our solder in there.
Nice.
- Is solder really what makes a big big metal thing?
Okay, I think that's good.
Awesome!
And we put it back in the holder.
Okay.
And then we'll unclip that.
Perfect.
Then we'll tug test.
Awesome.
We all passed.
Yay.
Round one.
Round one is done.
Who's ready for round two?
- Me - Me (upbeat music) We're continuing clockwise and we're looking at our LED.
So we have one that has more of a positive charge and that's going to be the longer one.
So, and then on our little chart, the one with the line, towards the end?
That's going to be more of our negative side.
So we want the longer one to go in the left hole.
We're going to bend our prongs a little bit so that they stay there while we're soldering.
So we're going to do our little heat first.
And then we're going to dab it.
- Dab it - Dab our solder.
There we go.
Like birthday candles, right?
Yeah.
(upbeat music) - This is so cool.
- So we're going to switch them all on together, okay?
One, two, three.
There it is.
There it goes.
Yay!
Good job!
(clapping hands) Awesome.
Awesome.
Did we have fun today?
- Yeah - Good.
Do we want to say goodbye to everyone that's watching?
- Bye - Bye.
Thanks for joining us.
