competition in store today. First, let's meet the Orange Team. - Hi, my name is Caleb. - Hi, my name is Zoe. - Hi, my name is Chris. - Hi, my name's Jesslyn. - [Host] Now, let's meet the Blue Team. - Hi, my name is Blake, and I'm the team captain for the Blue Team. - Hi, my name is Katalyn. - Hi, my name is Zach. - Hi, my name is Adam. - [Host] As always on Desserts From Around the World, our gameplay starts with sampling tasty treats from all over the globe. (tense music) Round one. Okay, teams, now confer with your teammates. (teams mumbling) - Spain. - [Jesslyn] Spain. - Spain. - [Host] Okay, players. Tell me your answers. - All right, we have our answer. America. - I guess Spain? - [Host] The Blue Team scores. From the apples to the crust, different peoples, cultures, and techniques have made apple pie the most popular dessert it is, so much so that it has become a part of American culture. Most major holidays in America include apple pie as a part of the menu. It symbolizes American nationalism and patriotism. (tense music) Round two. Okay, teams, time now to confer with your teammates. - France. - Paris. - Yeah, just pick France. - We have our answer. - [Host] Okay, tell me your answers. - I'm thinking France. - France. - [Host] Both teams win a point. Most people believe that the recipe for macarons was brought to France when Catherine da Vici of Italy married Henry II of France. The macaron folklore in Nancy, France, speaks of a set of 19th century nuns who sold macarons they made to survive after their convent was closed. There's even a macaron museum in Montmorillon, France. Macarons are so popular in France that, since 2005, every March 20th is Macaron Day. (tense music) Round three. Okay, teams, confer with your teammates. - Spain. - Spain? (teams mumbling) - I guess Spain. - You sure? - [Host] Now, tell me your answers. - Spain. - Greece. - [Host] Blue Team scores another point. It is believed that the churro was invented by Spanish shepherds who lived in the mountains. They created the dough and could fry it in a pan over a fire. The shape of the churro might have been inspired by the shape of a sheep's horn. Churros can be made in a variety of types. They may be simply dusted with cinnamon and sugar or filled with chocolate, caramel, or other types of fillings. (tense music) Round four. Okay, teams, time to confer once again with your teammates. - All right, what do you guys think? - Greece. - Maybe if we keep calling it Greece's... I think Greece. - Greece. - All right, you sure, everyone? - [Host] Now, tell me your answers. - It's from Greece. - We have picked Greece. - [Host] Both teams got this one right. Baklava is made by people of many cultures, and some argue over where it was originally created. It is a favorite of the Greek people and is a part of many traditions. It is a dish made only for special occasions because of the time and expense in making it. Many thin layers of phyllo dough are filled with nuts, spices, and sweetened with honey or syrup. (tense music) Round five. - This is good. - [Host] Okay, teams, confer with your teammates. - All right. - I think it's Poland. - Poland? - Poland, yeah, 'cause... Yeah. - [Host] Okay, tell me your answers. - Poland. - We're going to go with Poland. - [Host] Both teams got this one right. Dumplings are a popular meal across many different countries. There are many varieties of dumpling fillings, including meat, cabbage, mushrooms, and potatoes. But did you know that dumplings can also be served as a dessert? In Poland, these dumplings, or sweet pierogis, are well known. Kids and even adults love sweet pierogis. During Christmas, these popular dumplings are often served with poppy seed filling. Sweet pierogis are especially popular in the summer, when fresh fruits are available, and can be served with sugar, sweet cream, or melted butter on top. That wraps up today's delicious game Join us next time on Desserts from Around the World.
