- Hello, my name is Craig O'Neill.
I am so glad you're watching because we're gonna get to share a book with one of my favorite people in the whole wide world.
A woman who grew up just a few miles south of Conway on a farm near Mayflower.
Her name is Maria Hoskins and she puts her life stories in her books and you learn not only about her family, you also learn about life in Arkansas.
And this first one I'm gonna read you is "Papa's Pets".
Now, think for just a second, who do you know that is so good with animals?
Your mama, your daddy, brother, sister, next door neighbor, cousins?
They're really good with animals.
Wait till you hear about Papa.
Maria Hoskin's "Papa's Pets".
We all love our Papa, including the animals.
Animals just show up to love Papa too.
Papa has a dog named JR. JR is Papa's best friend .
JR sits on the arm of Papa's chair every day.
They watch TV and take a nap at the same time.
Grandma Dede says, "That dog thinks he's somebody!"
Papa puts JR in his little old pickup truck and off they go.
JR goes with Papa just about everywhere.
When Papa goes to the store JR goes too.
When Papa goes to the post office JR goes too.
When Papa feeds the chickens JR is there too.
Everyday Papa gets up early to feed the chickens.
JR walks with Papa.
The cats, Sylvester and Goldie walk behind JR.
The ducks, Goosey and Lucy walk behind the cats and off they all go to feed the chickens.
(Craig clucking) Yesterday as Papa and JR went for a walk to feed the chickens, guess what they found?
A rooster!
Where did that rooster come from?
No one knew.
So, guess what?
Papa has a new pet.
Now, when JR and Papa go the post office, Rocky the rooster goes too.
Papa is so cool!
Everyone loves Papa!
Papa loves his pets and his pets love Papa too.
There is no one kinder than Papa.
We love you Papa, and so do Jr. Sylvester and Goldie, the cats; Rocky, the rooster; Goosey and Lucy, the ducks; Maxie, the puppy, the chickens, the wild possums, raccoons, squirrels, deers, and every wild animal that stops by the Gill's home to see the man called Papa.
Wow, Papa is loved by all.
You know why?
Because he gives love and he gets it without even trying.
Isn't that a wonderful story?
