I can't stop!
(crashing sound) (birds chirping) (skates clanking against each other) I sure am glad I had a helmet on.
It is a great day to learn something new, and it is beautiful outside.
It is so important that we go outside in the summer and exercise and keep active.
There are so many fun things we can do.
We can go to a park.
We go fishing, go swimming, walk our dog.
Or even just run around and play with our friends.
One of my favorite things to do is roller skate.
But maybe you like to skateboard, ride your bike, or even ride an electric scooter.
Whatever you enjoy doing, it's really important that you do it safely.
Riding a bike, roller skating or riding a scooter are fun ways to play outside or even get to and from school.
But before you even get on your bike, it is important that you have the right equipment and you know how to use it properly.
You can see that when I roller skate, I wear wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads.
That's because if I fall, I want to protect my bones.
I actually fell when I was in fifth grade roller skating and broke my wrist.
So I know that I need to be extra careful.
The most important piece of protective equipment you can wear, though, is a helmet and a helmet that fits you the right way.
What are some of the reasons you think people wear helmets?
Well, they offer head protection from falling objects during a fall, in a crash or during sports in certain games.
Some sports like football, hockey and roller derby, which I play, require you to wear a helmet.
A helmet is for your safety and the way it fits is just as important as remembering to wear one.
Let's look at the characteristics of a good helmet.
The color and brightness matter, especially when you're playing outside or riding a bike in your neighborhood or in the street.
While a sports team may require a specific color to match their uniform, at home you should choose white or another color that's light or bright so that you are more easily seen.
The same thing goes for the clothing you're wearing.
Athletic clothing oftentimes has reflective stripes or patterns in it, which is such a great option.
Make sure your clothing is easily seen and it's best to avoid darker colors, especially at nighttime or when the sun is starting to set.
Check your helmet to see if it has straps and a slider or adjustment on the straps, making fitting it to your head easier.
The helmet should fit low and snug on your head, and the chinstrap should be able to be moved and adjusted so that it's secure underneath your chin.
A great option to look for when purchasing your helmet, and many helmets come with this, is two sets of pads.
Typically one thin and one thick to adjust to your head as you grow and to make sure the helmet continues to fit you in a safe and comfortable way.
Last, make sure your helmet is designed to protect your brain.
Everyone loves something that looks cool and is fun to wear, but keeping your brain safe is the most important thing.
It should have a sticker from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, CPSC, showing that it has passed some really good safety testing.
Helmets are a way to protect your head from injuries like cuts and skull fractures.
If you are in an accident, have a bad fall or injure yourself in another way, your helmet is designed to spread the impact over a larger area and prevent direct impact to the skull.
Wearing a quality properly fitting helmet can make all the difference between a serious injury and walking away from an accident unharmed.
When you're getting outside this summer, have fun, enjoy your time with friends and try something new.
Me, I'm off to skate some more.
Have a great summer.
Get outside and I'll see you later.
Science and reading skills, math and art, color wheels.
Let's go to class.
It's a blast!
You're a great student so we know that you can do it.
Rise and shine.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
