Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) - Well, hey, you all.
It is a great day to learn something new.
And I have been looking at pictures of my family and found a picture of me when I was a little girl, maybe even your age.
I sure have changed a lot since then.
Why do you think I look so different now?
I look different because living things grow and change over time, and you and I are living things.
Let's look at living things together.
First, let's look at this seed.
As it grows, it changes to the seedling and then this beautiful flower, and then the process starts over and over again.
We see these changes, and those changes happen because all living things have a cycle of life, but each cycle is unique to that living thing.
A life cycle is a series of stages of living that a thing goes through during its life, and all plants and all animals go through life cycles.
Life cycles repeat again and again.
Okay, let's look at another example.
Right here, we have an egg, and once it hatches, it becomes a chick.
Look how cute this chick is.
And then a chicken.
Those are some really, really big changes.
Oh, hi, everyone.
This is my friend, Helen The Hen.
Did you hear me talking about chickens, Helen?
- I sure did, and I got so excited.
You know, I used to be an egg and then I became a chick and then the magnificent hen you see before you.
- And you certainly are magnificent.
Do you know, Helen, of any other animals maybe that also start out as an egg?
- Hmm.
Well, my friend Shelly, she's a turtle.
She was once an egg, then she hatched and grew up to be a magnificent turtle.
She's got the most beautiful shell.
Let's see.
Ooh, and lizards lay eggs, and fish also lay eggs.
- Those are incredible examples.
I love turtles.
I would love to meet your friend Shelly one day.
- Oh, I have to introduce you.
- Yes.
You scientists at home, can you think of other living things that go through a life cycle?
Today, we talked about life cycles, the circle of life so that you can see how animals and plants move through their unique life cycles and that they start over and over again.
This was great and it really has helped me to see and understand how all of these living things move through their life cycles over and over again.
Before we go, Helen, do you have maybe a chicken fact you could tell us?
- Ooh.
Oh, yes I do.
Did you know that when a hen lays an egg, she can talk to her babies through the shell and they can chirp back?
- That is absolutely incredible.
I did not know that.
Thank you so much for learning with us today and teaching us.
We had a great time.
And thank you for everyone at home for exploring and spending your morning with us too.
Have a great day.
