Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat entertaining music) - Hey everybody, welcome back.
We have an awesome lesson for you here today.
You know, I love how art and design and math go so well together.
And today we're going to be drawing a picture, but we're going to do it using different types of shapes, and specifically two-dimensional shapes.
Now, what is a two-dimensional shape?
That's any flat shape.
Think of circles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids.
And we can use all kinds of different shapes to create a different picture.
And today we're going to try and create a house.
So you could do this wherever you might be too.
All you'll need is a piece of paper, a pen, or a pencil.
And I'm going to also use a ruler to kind of help me make some straight lines.
So let's get some help from our handy dandy chalkboard over here.
Now you can see that the picture we're going to try and make is a house.
There's also a yard.
We have a flag, we have a sun.
But all of those things are made of different types of shapes.
And so we're going to create those shapes and describe those.
And as we go through them, I want you to think, what kind of shape would this be?
So let's start off with just the basic part of the house.
Now we see that all the sides are the exact same and there's four different sides.
There's four corners.
What kind of shape is that?
Well, that's a square.
So I'm going to use my ruler to kind help me draw some straight lines and to make sure that all of my sides are the same size.
So as I go, let's create this.
I've got the side.
Now, really important that we remember squares all have the same size.
So if you want a square house, they have to be the same size.
You may not want to create that, and you can be creative with this and create your own.
But that's what we're going to go with.
All right.
So look at the picture that we have.
What other types of shapes do we have?
Well, I see there's another shape in the middle that has four sides, four corners.
Well, isn't that like a square?
Except this one looks a little bit different because not all the sides are the same.
That is a rectangle.
So I'm going to have a rectangular door right in the middle.
So I'm going to create that here.
Go across.
And there's my rectangle for my door.
Okay, so we can keep going.
What other shapes do you see here?
Well, look at the top of my house, my roof.
What kind of shape would this be?
It has two parallel sides.
The top and the bottom are parallel meaning that they're going in the exact same direction, but they're not the same size or the same length.
This is a trapezoid.
So I'm going to create a trapezoid up on top.
And what's really important with a trapezoid is that, oh, there we go.
And your picture may not be perfect the first time.
That's okay, we can always redraw it.
But we've got two parallel sides and they are not the same length.
So there's our trapezoid.
But you can also see on our flag that we have out in the yard, a rectangular pole, a triangle that has three sides, three corners.
What all could you create?
Thanks for joining us here today.
