You know, I'm just here working on our clock here at the schoolhouse.
Our clock is broken and it's really important that we're able to tell time so that we can make appointments or catch the bus, whatever it is that we need to do.
And you know, that's what our lesson today is about, telling time.
And we're going to be able to tell time on a clock like this, which is called an analog clock.
We have digital clocks that will read those numbers but something like this, there's a little bit more work to it.
And let's see if we can figure it out.
And I bet we can.
Alright, so now as we look at this clock, we can see a couple of different things right away.
And you see these different, what we call, hands of the clock.
So there's a shorter hand and there's a longer hand.
Well, the shorter hand is the hour hand so it tells us what hour we're in.
So if I'm looking at it right now, I can see, well the short hand's pointing right at the six so I must be in the hour of six.
But we've got to read both hands of the clock.
So whenever I look to my longer hand, the longer hand is the minute hand and so it's pointing straight up.
And anytime it's pointing at that 12 and going straight up, it's going to be on the hour.
So this would be at six o'clock.
So I would write that as six, use my colon, and then I'm going to have zero zero.
And that colon's just those two dots.
But something really important about the minute hand is that as we go around the clock, it actually goes by fives with these numbers.
So if I were to move it over to the one and I count that over, my shorthand, my hour hand's still pointing at the six and my minute hand is pointing right over here at one but it goes by five.
So let's count around the clock really quickly and I'll show you what I mean.
So this would be at five minutes.
This would be 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55.
And then we've made it all the way back, which there are 60 minutes in an hour but we've made it back and we'd be on the hour there.
So let's finish out this example.
I know that I'm in the hour of six.
My minute hand is pointing to that one, which we said we're counting by fives.
That's 6:05.
So I would have a six, I would have my two dots, that colon, and then I would write 05.
And that's how we can read this.
So let's look at another example.
Let's say I move this clock to here now.
Okay, I can see, hey that shorthand is going towards the four so I know that the hour is in four but then look at my minute hand.
That longer hand is not up on the hour anymore so I've got to count, remember by fives, so 5, 10, 15.
So this would be at 4:15.
Now something really important to remember is that there can be an an AM or a PM.
AM means it'd be in the morning time and PM is the afternoon or evening.
So let's say if it was 4:15 PM, maybe I just got home from school because that would be in the afternoon.
Keep practicing and you guys are going to be able to do this telling time on any clock that you see.
