Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Hey, everybody.
Did you know that I have a superpower?
It's teleportation.
Teleporting means that I can jump and go anywhere that I want in the world.
And it's so awesome, right?
I can travel wherever I want.
But there is something you've got to know about teleportation.
You've got to know about weather and climate in different areas.
Because if I want to jump and teleport to a new region around the world, I want to know what should I be wearing?
Should I dress in some certain way?
Should I take a big coat?
I got to know those different things.
But what exactly is weather and what is the difference between weather and climate?
Well, weather is a day to day description of the air in an area, and it can be measured in different ways.
We measure the weather and temperature, right?
We measure it in precipitation.
That's like rainfall falling from the sky.
Right.
How much moisture is falling?
Humidity is another measurement of weather and humidity, have you ever walked outside and it just feels sticky and it's like you're sweating right away?
That's humidity.
Wind is another measurement and there's other factors, too.
There are many types of weather phenomena, such as rain, snow, tornadoes, hurricanes and more.
In other words, weather is what you see and find every day.
Whereas climate is a little bit different.
Climate is usually defined more as the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
It's sort of the average of the conditions of that area or region and the climate of a region, it might depend on different factors, like is the region close to a large body of water, like an ocean or lake, or if it's a mountainous region.
I tell you what, let's go visit some different regions around the world.
And first, let's go visit a mountainous region.
Now we're going to go way up high in the mountains.
So what do you think the weather might be like there?
Let's go find out.
Are you ready?
Three, two, one.
Let's go.
Oh, it's so cold up here.
And there's even snow.
The higher elevations are usually colder.
Now the word elevation means at the height to which something is raised.
When we talk about it with the elevation of land like a mountain, we mean how high from sea level or how high from the water level that where an ocean might normally be at.
And since we're up way up high on a mountain, we are way above sea level, meaning we are at a higher elevation.
This causes the air up here to be a lot colder.
And that's why we might even see snow up here.
Sometimes on the tops of mountains there's snow all year long.
It is so cold.
Let's get out of here.
Let's go somewhere warmer.
What's a region we could go visit now?
I'm thinking somewhere closer to sea level that doesn't have a high elevation.
How about an island that'll be near an ocean?
Let's check out the climate there.
Are you ready?
Three, two, one.
Let's go.
Oh, man.
This is nice.
This is so much warmer.
The air here just feels good.
The sun is beating down.
In fact, the sun, it's really warm here.
I think that has something to do with.
We're here on an island that's closer to the equator.
The equator is an imaginary line around right in the middle of the earth.
And the sun hits more directly here so it's warmer here.
And also, what helps with the climate in this area is that it's close to a large body of water.
This kind of creates a more moderate climate.
Large bodies of water, such as oceans, seas and large lakes affect the climate of an area because the water heats and cools more slowly than the land.
That's why in the summer, these coastal regions will stay a little bit cooler and in the winter they stay warmer.
And it is so nice right now.
I am loving this.
I'll just stay here.
Thanks for joining me and learning about climate.
Now we know the difference between climate and weather.
So I'm just going to chill right here.
You all have a great day.
