I am La Profa.
Molina, and today we are going to learn about Spanish heritage in the United States.
(speaks in Spanish) Hispanic heritage.
Did you know that over 4 million Hispanics living in the USA trace their roots to more than 20 nations?
From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the diverse backgrounds and cultures of these Hispanic Americans.
During this month, communities and cities throw events, both fun and educational to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
Do you know anyone that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month?
Now you know somebody.
I celebrate it every year with my family.
Let's talk about some notable figures that have made contributions to our society.
We're going to start with my favorite doctor, Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Hispanic female astronaut to work for NASA.
Then we have Carlos Santana, who is a guitarist.
He has been playing his amazing guitar for singers like Shakira and Beyonce.
Now we have Ms. Sandra Cisneros, who is a writer.
Ella es una escritora muy famosa.
I absolutely love her books.
And then we have Mr. Eloy Rodriguez, who is a científico.
He has made great contributions to American science.
That is a large Hispanic community in the USA.
Let's take a look at some places in our nation where we can fully experience the richness and fantastic culture.
For example, the Cuban American community celebrates their pride in Miami's Little Havana.
Calle ocho, 8th Street is known for Cubans restaurants, cafes, and shops.
Also, it's known by the freedom towers that are very close by.
How have people from other countries influenced your community?
Another place that is beautiful is one of our neighboring states.
In the city of San Antonio, Texas, there is a unique multicultural history.
The Fiesta San Antonio is a 10-day celebration with foods, music, and parades.
The festival honors the heroes of the Alamo and the battle of San Jacinto.
La Villita, the city's older neighborhood, hosts many festival events.
How do people celebrate history and culture where you live?
I hope you enjoy learning about Hispanic heritage in the USA and adios!
See you next time!
