Welcome to Arkansas PBS Rise and Shine.
I am la profe Molina and today's lesson is called, I am bilingual.
Did you know that all kids have unique talents or a combination of talents?
What is your talent?
No matter what your talents are, there are so many reasons for you to feel special.
Today I am going to tell you more about my superpower.
It is a very special talent.
And to help you understand how my brain works, I need my superhero help today.
His name is Super Luis.
Would you like to meet Super Luis?
Let's call him together.
We must call him in Spanish.
Otherwise, he won't visit us.
Repeat after me, Super Luis, ven aquí.
That means Super Luis, come here.
Did you know that Super Luis also has a super power?
I mean, of course he's a hero.
He can speak, read, write, listen, and dream in two, sometimes three, or even more languages.
That is a big deal.
Super Luis is bilingual.
Bilingualism goes hand to hand with multiculturalism.
Being bilingual is the ability to speak, converse and express oneself in more than one language.
That is so cool.
I am wondering if Luis is available now.
Help me call him one more time.
Remember, repeat after me.
Super Luis, ven aquí.
It rhymes, right?
Super Luis, ven aquí.
Whoa!
Hola, Super Luis.
It's so nice to have you here in Arkansas PBS Rise and Shine.
Are we on TV?
Are people watching me right now?
Lady: Yes.
Yes, you are on TV.
You are with all the children of the state of Arkansas.
Hola, everybody.
Sorry I didn't see you.
Super Luis, can you tell our kids from Arkansas what super heroes like you do besides saving the world, of course.
Well, I love eating, and I love tamales, mmm, tamales.
Wow, Super Luis, that sounds like a very fun job.
Did you know Super Luis, that being bilingual improved the structure of the performance of the brain?
Mm hmm.
Imagine that your brain is working out, like going to the gym.
Did you like to exercise?
I love exercising.
I love flying and running super fast.
Well, it is important to exercise your brain, too.
The results of research studies worldwide demonstrate the many advantages of learning other languages.
It is very healthy for your brain to be bilingual.
But how can you become bilingual?
Well, it is important that you start investing in the language acquisition process with some simple things, like listening to music in the language you will like to learn or watching your favorite TV shows in that language.
Super Luis: Mm, hmm.
Another way that is very simple and it will help you reach your language repertory is by labeling items at your home using a sticky note.
Then you place those sticky notes on the items around your house.
Oo, la bandera.
La bandera.
And el sombrero.
Ooo, like me, I'm wearing a cap.
You're wearing a sombrero.
Please note that you do not need to translate every single new word that you are learning because you are helping your brain to get used to that new language.
Did you know that you are already using many words in English that have the same meaning in Spanish?
Super Luis: Yeah, like what?
Lady: Hey, Super Luis, Super Luis: Sí.
Lady: would you like to help me with the English versions of the words that I will like to say?
Super Luis: Sí.
Lady: President.
Super Luis: Presidente Lady: Sí.
Restaurant.
Super Luis: Restaurante.
Lady: Muy bien.
Fantastic.
Fantástico.
Lady: Muy bien.
Great job, Super Luis.
Dame cinco.
Dame cinco again.
Super Luis: Yeah.
Lady: Good job.
Today, you learned about Luis and my superpower.
We are bilingual.
Make today the beginning of your journey of learning another language.
Thank you for learning with us today.
And see you next time.
Adiós.
