It's Captain House and I have my friend Arthur, the bird here, and I'm so glad you're joining me on a new adventure learning about words.
Do you know what a Pirate's favorite letter is?
Well, it's R, of course, because pirates love to say Rrrr, and today we're going to be learning all about R control vowels because when R stands beside a vowel, that vowel can no longer use its short or long sound, it makes a sound like er, or, ir, or my personal favorite ar!
Pirates are so bossy that we just take over and make those vowels make new sounds.
When R gets beside an A, it says ar, like in car and star, when R gets beside an E, it says er, like in her and verb, and when I gets beside or R gets beside an I, it says ir, like in bird and firm.
Just like my good friend, Arthur, the bird right here.
When R gets beside an O, it says, or, like in corn and for.
And when R gets beside a U, it says, ur like, in curl and purple.
Can you think of any words that say ar or er, or, or, or, or, or, or, or ur, any of those words are bossy R words.
And the next time you're reading and you see that bossy R right next to the vowel, remember that pirates are so bossy in that R is going to make that vowel have a different sound.
It's not a short or a long sound.
It's an R control vowel.
This trick will help you when you're spelling.
And you hear that er, ar, or, or ir sound in a word.
