Ms. House couldn't be here today, so I'm filling in for her.
I'm Mint E. Fresh, and I'm a tube of toothpaste.
Today, we're going to be visiting the dentist to learn how to floss.
- Boo!
- Ah!
Frisbee!
What are you doing here?
And where did you get those teeth from?
- I found them in the house.
They're someone's false teeth.
- Oh, I hope you washed them before you put them in your mouth.
- I'm gonna say yes.
- Okay, good.
That'll at least make me feel better.
Remember, you should be brushing your teeth and you should be flossing, right?
- I don't know if you've noticed, but I don't have any teeth.
- Well, you can at least brush your tongue.
- Oh, yeah, I definitely do that.
- Frisbee.
Now, I know kids these days think that the floss is this.
But-- - You call that the floss?
- It's a tube of toothpaste doing the floss.
Yes, that's what it is.
- Mm.
I'd practice more.
- Okay, I will practice on that if you practice on brushing your tongue.
- All right, I'm gonna go do that right now.
- Is that a deal?
Good.
- Good.
- Well, that's not the kind of floss we're talking about today.
There is a floss rule in spelling.
Yep, the floss rule is that in a single-syllable, short-vowel, closed-syllable word, where the vowel is followed by an F, L, S or Z, that final letter is doubled.
That means if the word has one syllable, has a short vowel and it's a closed syllable where the consonant is the final letter, and that letter is L, F, S or Z, you will double the letter and write two, like in the word floss.
Floss is a single-syllable, short-vowel, closed-syllable word.
And that vowel O is followed by S, so that means we spell it F-L-O-S-S. We had to double that final consonant and write two Ss.
Now let's look at some other words that follow this rule too, like words that end with LL, words like all, and mall, call, hill, bell, and pill.
Some other words that follow that floss rule end with FF, words like stuff, and cuff, or sniff.
- Sniff!
(gasps) - Frisbee, you're back!
- Yeah.
- I was so worried about you.
I was wanting you to come back and learn some more about the floss rule.
- Yeah, that's exciting.
Tell me more.
- Well, like I've said, if the word is closed-syllable, has a short vowel and it has S, F, L or Z at the end, you have to double it, like in the word sniff.
- Yeah, like staff.
- Like staff, and fluff, and cliff.
- Yeah!
- And there's also words that end with two Ss, words like floss, again, and boss, and miss, and dress, and toss, and less.
And Frisbee, I bet you don't know this, but my favorite letter in the whole world is Z.
- Z, why?
- And only thing better than one Z is-- - Two Zs!
- Two Zs!
And the floss rule means that some words end with two Zs, words like buzz, and fuzz, and frizz, like-- - Frizz?
Wait, what, jazz!
What are you saying?
- Like Fris-bee, like Frisbee!
Frisbee!
- Wait, what?
You're saying my name?
- Well, the word frizz is a floss rule word, and it's kind of like your name of Frisbee, right?
- But it's not my name.
- But it's really close.
- Okay.
- You'll let it pass?
- I'll let it pass this time.
- And jazz and fizz.
So, kiddos, and Frisbee, remember this floss rule that when a short vowel in a single, closed-syllable word, you will double that final consonant.
keep practicing that floss dance, and remember to brush your teeth and your tongue, and floss tonight.
And I hope you'll come back and join me and Frisbee for more learning tomorrow.
- See ya!
