Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Good morning, learners.
I'm so excited you're joining me today.
And today, we're gonna be learning about the beginning sounds in words.
The beginning sound of a word is the first sound you hear.
The beginning sound could also be called the onset.
Now let's practice.
I'm gonna say a word and I want you to listen to the first sound you hear.
If I said the word buh, ball, you hear buh first.
Buh is the first sound in the word ball.
Let's try the word cup.
Kuh, kuh, cup.
Cup starts with kuh, kuh, or C is the first sound you hear in the word cup.
Let's try one more word.
Let's do the word fun.
Fuh, fun.
Fuh, fun starts with F or fuh.
Those are the onset or the beginning sounds and we're gonna play a game with our onsets.
I don't know about you, but I'm getting hungry.
I wanna make myself something to eat, but the only rule is that everything I put on my plate has to start with the same letter.
Let's see, what letter do I want to eat today?
Let's eat the letter P so everything on my plate has to start with the puh, puh sound.
Let's dig in my bag and see what we can eat today.
Now, remember, it has to have a puh sound in the beginning to go on my plate.
Let's see what I find first.
I have popcorn.
Can popcorn go on my plate?
Puh, puh, popcorn.
It definitely starts with P so it's going on the plate.
What about a pepper?
Does puh, puh, pepper start with puh?
It does.
It's going on the plate too.
What about carrot?
Kuh, kuh, carrot.
Does carrot start with puh?
It does not, so I'm not gonna be eating a carrot today.
I've got one more thing.
What about a pretzel?
Does puh, puh, pretzel start with puh?
It does, so I'm gonna be eating a pretzel.
It looks like today I'm having popcorn, a pepper and a pretzel.
Now let's play a game together where you're gonna get a piece of paper and something to draw with.
Let's start by drawing a big circle that'll be our plate.
On the plate, let's write the letter or the grapheme that represents the kuh sound, and that's the letter C. I'm gonna say a food and if it starts with the kuh sound, I want you to shout out affirmative, which means yes.
And we're gonna draw it on our plate.
If it doesn't, I want you to shout out no way, Jose, and we're not gonna draw that one.
Our first food is a cupcake.
Does cupcake start with kuh?
Affirmative, I hope you're drawing that big cupcake on your plate.
Let's do carrot.
Does carrot start with kuh?
Affirmative, yes, it does.
Let's do one more.
What about banana?
Does banana start with kuh?
No way, Jose.
Well, I want you to think of some more things that you can draw on your plate that start with the kuh sound.
And I will see you back again tomorrow for another day of learning with Rise and Shine.
