Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning learners.
I'm Randi House, a kindergarten teacher, from right here in Arkansas.
Today, we're gonna be learning all about suffixes.
A suffix is a word added to the end of a root or a base word and a suffix changes the root or base words meaning.
So if this was our root word, the suffix comes on the end of the dog.
Some common suffixes are F-U-L or ful, which means full of something, like beautiful, which means full of beauty.
L-Y means to do something, like clearly, which means to do something in a clear fashion.
L-E-S-S or less means without, like careless, which means to do something without care.
Ness, N-E-S-S means being, like happiness, which means being happy.
E-S-T, est, that means most, like greatest, which means the most awesome or most great or the best.
E-R, er, means someone who, like painter, someone who paints.
And finally we have E-S-S or ess, which means female, like the word seamstress.
And that's a female who sews clothing.
One tool that we can use to help learn about suffixes, is called a suffix map.
And we are going to complete one together.
So I want you to get a piece of paper or something to write with.
And we're gonna draw our map using the suffix E-S-S or ess.
I drew a large circle, and then I just kind of broke it in half, both ways.
And in the middle, I have a smaller circle.
And in that smaller circle is where I wrote my suffix ess.
The next part is where I wrote some words that have E-S-S as a suffix.
I wrote the words hostess, goddess, villainous, and sorceress.
My final and outer layer is where I wrote the definitions of these words.
So hostess means a female host.
Goddess means a female god.
Sorceress means a female who practices sorcery.
And I love this word, villainess is a female villain.
I think I would like to read a story about a villainess.
Tools like this one, help us to understand words by looking at pieces of the word, to really understand the meaning.
And next time you see a word that has E-S-S in it remember that ess means female, and that should help you remember what that word means.
Thank you for joining us today.
I hope that you will use this suffix map anytime you come across a word and maybe need to learn it a little bit more.
And I hope you'll come back tomorrow for more learning with Arkansas Rise and Shine.
