Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Good morning, friends.
I am so excited you're joining me for another fun day of learning together.
Today, we're going to be learning all about syllables in words.
A syllable is a part of a word that usually contains one vowel sound and you can often hear those syllables in a word.
Words can have one, two, three, or even more syllables.
I like to clap syllables and then count them like this.
I'm gonna say the word doll and let's clap it.
Doll, doll only has one syllable.
Let's try cupcake.
Cupcake, that has two syllables.
Let's try pumpkin.
Pumpkin, also has two syllables.
Let's do doctor.
Doctor, that has two syllables.
Banana, banana.
That one has three syllables.
One last one, bicycle.
Bicycle, that also has three.
Now let's play a game where I'm gonna say a word and then we're gonna take a syllable away and see what you have left.
Okay, ready?
Headache, without head, I have ache.
Playtime, without play, I have time.
Snowflake, without snow, I have flake.
Bathroom, without bath, I have room.
Teapot, without tea, I have pot.
Now you probably noticed I deleted or I took away that first syllable in all those words.
Now let's try switching it up and taking away the last syllable, okay?
Playground, without ground, I have play.
Cowboy, without boy, I have cow.
Rainbow, without bow, I have rain.
Popcorn, without corn, I have pop.
Backpack, without pack, I have back.
Now, let's mix them up and see if you can listen very closely to see if we're taking away or deleting that first or the last syllable, okay.
Headband, without head, I have band.
Playhouse, without house, I have play.
Snowman, without snow, I have man.
Fireman, without man, I have fire.
Last one, gumball.
Without ball, I have gum.
I just love to play with syllables and see how I can make new words from words that I already know.
Thank you for joining me today and I hope to see you back again tomorrow for another fun day of learning with me here at Arkansas "Rise and Shine."
