Thank you for joining me today for a fun and exciting lesson all about vowels.
Let's review what our five vowels are.
We have A E I O and U.
Now we know that your mouth is open when you make the vowel sound and vowels can make two different sounds.
They can make a short sound like this, ah, eh, ih, awh, and uh.
Or they can make long sounds like this, A E I O and U.
Now, today, we're only going to be using those short sounds and we're only going to be using words where the vowel is in the middle of the word.
So let's review those short vowel sounds again.
We have A says, ah as an apple.
Remember our mouths are open during vowel sounds and if you watch my mouth when I say, ah, it looks like I'm going to eat an apple.
We have E says, eh as in egg.
My mouth comes up on the corners just a little bit when I say, eh.
I says, ih as in igloo.
My mouth comes up a little bit more than the E. Let's try those two again.
Eh, ih.
They sound a lot alike, but watch my mouth.
Eh, ih.
O says, awh as in octopus.
My mouth is completely open.
U says, uh as an umbrella.
I know what you're thinking, I know, "Mrs. House, why in the world are you dressed up like a doctor today?"
Well, kiddos today I'm Dr. House, and you are going to help me with some very important vowel surgery.
We have some patients coming in today who need some help because they're missing their vowels.
I'm going to need your help in saving these patients and putting them back together.
I think our first patient is here.
Let's see who we have up first.
Ah, yes, we have our first patient.
This is my friend the fox.
If you look, I have his onset, a beginning sound.
I have his ending sound, f- awh-x.
We're missing the vowel.
Let's break that apart and see if we can figure out what vowel goes in the middle.
F- awh - x What vowel do you think it is?
It's O. Mr. Fox is missing his O.
All right, let's see who's up next.
Ah, we've got a web.
Web.
Let's break this apart and see what vowel is missing.
Whu- eh - buh.
Eh, eh, if you look at my mouth, my corners of my mouth are curved up just a little bit.
Whu- eh-buh.
This would be E like in egg.
So we're missing the E in web.
All right, up next we have, Mr. Six.
Mr. Six is missing his vowel.
We have, s- ih - x.
Watch my mouth.
S- ih-x.
The corners of my mouth are curving up just a little bit more than they were with eh.
So this is going to be an I as in igloo.
So, S-I-X, I is what's missing.
Oh, we have a pot.
Puh- awh - t. Puh-awh-t. You watch my mouth, I'm making an O, so we know that puh-awh-t, is missing it's O.
All right, let's see who's next.
Mr. Mop.
We have, mhmm- awh - puh.
Mhmm- awh-puh.
Just like in pot, I'm making an awh sound as in octopus, so O is what's missing in this patient.
We've got just a few more.
Oh, we see a lot of this right now in the summer.
We have sun.
S- uh - nuh.
S- uh-nuh.
So if you're listening to that uh sound, that's U as in uh-uh-umbrella.
All right, I think we've got two more.
Jet.
Juh- eh - t. Juh-eh-eh.
That would be E as in egg.
All right, last one.
We have Mr.
Bat.
Buh-ah-t. Buh-ah.
If you watch my mouth, it's eating an apple, so we know that's A.
Well guys, you did a great job, and you were able to help me save so many lives today.
I hope to see you back again tomorrow for another fun day of learning with Rise and Shine.
