Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat lively music) - Good morning learners!
I am Randi House, and I'm so excited that you're joining me this morning.
Today, we're gonna be talking all about character traits.
Let's remember that characters are the people, the animals, the creatures, or the things in a story.
And those characters have actions, and looks, and thoughts, and words, and feelings.
And we call all those things their character traits.
They help us learn about that character on the inside and the outside.
Sometimes, authors share personality traits like their attitude, or their thoughts, and actions, and dialogue.
The author can also tell us about their physical traits.
These are the traits that can be seen or described in pictures or texts.
Let's look at this character.
The author has told us her physical traits.
She has curly hair.
She's wearing a purple dress.
She has caramel-colored skin.
But now, her personality traits are things that we're gonna have to find out in the story.
We're gonna have to infer them by her actions and her dialogue.
Those things you really just can't see by looking at her.
She's gonna show us who she is by her attitude, her thoughts, her actions, and her words.
While you're reading the story, you start to develop an understanding about this character.
So, let's take a moment to think about what character traits you would have if you were the main character in a book or a story.
So, I drew a quick picture of myself and I added in some of my personality traits as if I were the character in a book.
It looks just like me, right guys?
So, first I added in some of my physical traits.
Those are the things that you can see.
Like I have blonde hair and I have blue eyes.
My shirt's red because I like to wear red a lot.
But I also added in some of my personality traits.
These are things that you wouldn't be able to know if you just looked at me or saw a picture of me.
So I added in that I'm happy, and that I'm a good friend, and I like to read, and I'm also a teacher.
I also added in a nice little thought bubble about something that I'm thinking about.
And I'm thinking about tacos and dogs because those are two of my favorite things.
So, this character map helps you understand me as a character.
It tells you my physical traits as well as some of my personality traits.
So sometime today, I want you to draw your very own self-portrait as if you were the character in a book.
What are your physical traits?
What color of hair, and skin, and eyes do you have?
But don't forget to add in your personality traits because these are what makes you unique.
What are your likes and dislikes?
How are you feeling?
And what can you share to help others understand you better?
What's something you like to do on your own time?
I want you to draw your portrait and share it with somebody in your home.
And if you're feeling really adventurous, I want you to write your very own story where you get to be the character of your very own story.
So, I hope to see you back tomorrow for more learning with Rise and Shine.
