Rise and Shine 3rd-5th Math Lesson: 2021 ATOY Susanna Post - Fruitastic Graphic
Today, Ms. Susanna Post needs your help gathering data to organize student’s favorite fruits into picture graphs and bar graphs. Ms. Post thinks that if the fruits that students like are available in the cafeteria, they will be more likely to eat them. Let's work to see if we can pick out the student's favorite fruit.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Good morning, everyone.
Oh, it is raining cats and dogs out there today.
Oh, it's so good to be with, ugh, I forgot the mail again.
Give me just a second.
(dog groaning) Oh, Frisbee, thank you.
Thank you.
- Sorry, it may have had a little drool on it.
- It's okay.
Thank you, Frisbee.
Okay, we got a postcard.
Let's see what it says.
"Ms. Post, how can I help students in my school eat healthier?"
What a great question.
I love that you are thinking about healthy eating and ways that you can help your friends and other students be healthier too.
Anytime that you wanna convince someone to do something, it's always easier if you're asking them to do something they like.
So here's our first step, we need to gather some data about what healthy foods the students in your school like.
Now, let's think about an example.
Let's say that you surveyed 30 students about what fruits they like the best, and you might have done that just by going around and asking them and maybe documenting that information, or you could have created a Google form and sent that out by email to all of the students.
But when you get the results back, you want to put all of that data together.
So, for our example, let's say that when you got that information back, you found out that four students like strawberries best, six prefer bananas, five really like watermelon, eight students said they like apples the best, and six prefer oranges.
Now, my hypothesis is that if the fruits they like are available in the cafeteria, they'll probably be more likely to eat them.
So let's picture this first by creating a picture graph.
Now, a picture graph will show us a picture of each fruit every time a person picked that fruit as their favorite.
Let's create it.
Okay, now first, we're gonna add four strawberries to the graph, then six bananas.
Now we need to add five watermelon slices.
Now, eight apples.
And last, we finish the graph with six oranges.
Now, the way that picture graphs work is by showing us who the leader is.
So when we look at which fruit took the lead, we can see that first place goes to the apples and second place is a tie between the bananas and the oranges.
Now, as you get older, you will start to see fewer picture graphs and more bar graphs.
Now, bar graphs do the same things, but they just don't have the pictures.
So this time, instead of letting our graph run right and left, let's make it run from the ground up.
So first, we will move up four and label that column the strawberries.
Then the next bar, we will go up six levels to represent the votes for bananas.
The next bar is gonna represent the five votes for watermelon.
The next bar represents eight apples.
And lastly, we finish the bar graph with six oranges.
When you look at the picture, it shows us that the favorites literally rose to the top, so they have the highest bar levels.
What a great topic we got to discuss today.
Being able to survey people and collect data is one of the most important skills you can have.
This skill can help people make very important decisions.
There are lots of adults that do this very thing, they survey people, they find out their opinions, and then they bring that information together to make those important decisions.
Well, I hope today's lesson helped you think about how you can survey people to help change things for the better.
Maybe think about some other important topics that you're interested in that you could gather data on.
Don't ever think that you are too young, or that your opinion doesn't matter.
I hope you have a great rest of the day.
Remember, keep a positive mindset, grow every day by reading and asking questions, and there's nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it.
I'll see you soon.
