Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Good morning, everyone.
It's so good to see you.
I just went out and I've been picking up groceries for the teacher's house.
Oh, I forgot the mail.
Oh, one of the teachers must have picked it up for me.
A postcard for Ms. Post.
Let's see what it says.
Ms. Post, what do the teachers like to drink at the teacher's house?
Well, I think this goes for almost all of us in Arkansas, but we love to drink our sweet tea.
Now I'm a little bit picky when it comes to my sweet tea.
Have you ever heard someone say they wanted half and half?
It means half of their cup is filled with unsweet tea and then half of their cup is filled with sweet tea.
It's still sweet, just not as sweet.
Well, guess what?
We are about to have a birthday party here at the teacher's house.
And I need to make enough sweet tea for everyone that comes to this party.
We're expecting about 30 people to come.
So how much sweet tea should I make?
Let's see.
I bet we can use math to plan this out.
Okay, here's what I know.
One gallon is equal to four quarts, that's equal to eight pints, which is equal to 16 cups.
And I know that each cup is eight ounces.
Well, these red party cups, I know that these hold 16 ounces.
And when I think about my conversions, that's exactly one pint.
So I'm going to estimate that everyone will probably drink one glass of sweet tea and then they'll want one refill.
So I need about two of these per person.
So two pints per person.
Let's look at the volume comparisons.
That means that hmm, a gallon of tea would cover, I think about four people.
Let's see, 30 people divided into groups of four.
So I'm going to count by fours.
Four, eight, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28.
I'm almost at 30.
32.
Okay, so seven and a half gallons would cover everybody, but I want to overestimate just in case.
So I'm gonna make eight gallons and that should cover everyone.
We always tend to round up when we're estimating.
Okay, If I run down, I might not have enough.
So I'm going to make eight gallons of sweet tea for the party.
Now, have you ever made sweet tea?
It's pretty easy.
First, you have to boil the water and I've actually already had water boiling.
You bring about four cups of water to a boil.
Once it boils, you remove it from the heat, then you're gonna add your teabags.
Now, I usually use three.
So once your water is all hot, you're gonna add about three tea bags and then you'll let them steep in the water for about five minutes.
Then once they've been in there for five minutes, you're gonna take them out and throw them away, and I've already done all that.
Then you're gonna add the good part, the sugar.
Now, some people for a gallon of tea, will use a whole cup of sugar.
But remember I told you I like half and half.
So I usually use about half of a cup of sugar.
So you will put your sugar in and then you'll stir it real good until it dissolves.
Now, this mixture is called your concentrate because it hasn't been diluted with the water yet.
So this is extra strong and it won't taste really good yet, but you're gonna pour this tea base into the pitcher.
And when you do, you are gonna to have some really good sweet tea.
Okay, so let's mix the really good sweet stuff with the water.
Oh, it looks so good.
And I'm gonna mix it up.
Okay.
Oh, that looks amazing!
Now, we don't want to drink it hot.
It's still a little bit warm right now.
So make sure when you're done, you put it in the refrigerator and then you have to be patient.
Let it sit in the refrigerator until it gets really cold.
I have had so much fun with you today making sweet tea.
I hope that today's lesson helped you think about how you can use math to plan for parties or to plan for serving lots of people.
Estimating how much you need for something is such an important skill.
I hope you have a great rest of the day.
Maybe you can even start by making some yummy sweet tea.
- Oh, sweet tea.
- (sighs) Frisbee, you scared me.
- Hey, Ms. Post, everybody knows I love sweet tea the most.
- Oh.
(plastic cups falling) I'm sorry.
- Oh, Frisbee, I can't make sweet tea for a puppy dog, but I will.
I'll go play fetch with you, does that sound okay?
- Yes ma'am!
- Okay.
Remember keep a positive mindset.
Grow every day by reading and asking questions.
And there's nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it.
I'll see you soon.
- Let's go.
