Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat funky music) - Hey everybody.
- Hi, Joel.
- Hey, Blueberry.
- Did I scare you?
(Blueberry laughs) - You did a little bit.
You know, it's a rainy day here at the Science Lab.
- Oh, I love the rain.
- I know.
What do you like to do in the rain?
- Oh, I love to sleep in and I like to eat snacks and watch movies.
- Those are great things.
You know something I like to do?
- What is that?
- I like to do puzzles.
- (gasps) I love puzzles.
I did a puzzle once.
It was the Mona Lisa.
But I think I messed up - Ooh.
- some of the pieces and it looked like The Scream.
(Blueberry screams) - Oh, well, you know, better luck next time, Blueberry.
But I tell you what, we can come up with a puzzle and we can do it by adding different shapes together.
- You have puzzles with you?
- I've got puzzles.
Let's do it.
(Blueberry exclaims) - You've got everything, Joel.
- We're ready, hey.
So as we compose a large shape, we're going to do it with some smaller shapes in between.
And-- - Oh yeah, that makes sense.
- That does make sense, right?
And so as we look at our picture here, we've got it looks like few different shapes, and one of them, the bigger one in the middle, has six different sides on it.
- [Blueberry] Whoa.
- [Joel] It kind of looks like this piece.
- Oh yeah, that's the one.
- Yeah, okay.
Do you know what this one's called?
What shape this would be?
- Hmm.
- A six-sided piece of puzzle.
- Well, it is six-sided, that is true.
It is actually a hexagon.
- Oh, that's a big word.
- [Joel] It looks like it fits right in here.
It's a perfect fit.
- Oh, it's a perfect fit.
- Hey, okay.
I tell you what, it looks like we have another one too.
So if we add that one in there, now we've got two hexagons that are making up part of our shape here for our puzzle.
- A double hexagon.
- Woo, yes.
Now at the top of our puzzle, we've got a shape that has three sides.
- [Blueberry] Oh that's easy.
- [Joel] Oh, you have that one?
- That's a slice of pizza.
- A slice of pizza.
It does, it's the same shape as a slice of pizza, if you cut it in this shape.
And I'll tell you what, three sides, it's a triangle.
- Oh, yeah.
- [Joel] Triangle has three sides.
- That'll go right there.
- Right there, you think so?
- Mm-hm, yeah.
- Oh, there's one.
It looks like we have another one.
- [Blueberry] Oh, two slices.
- We got two.
Okay.
Hey, we just have a couple shapes left.
Now, this one over here at the end, it looks like it has four sides.
What shape do you know has four sides, Blueberry?
- Oh, that's easy.
- [Joel] Okay, what do you got?
- American cheese.
- American cheese.
Well, they are kind of cut in, a lot of times, four sides, like a square.
- Oh a square, it's called a square.
- A square.
Yeah, well, except this one's not a square.
Oh no.
- Oh, that one's melted.
- This, yeah, it's melted.
It's melted, it's leaning.
(Blueberry laughs) So it does have four sides and they're equal length like a square, but the angles don't come to a 90-degree angle like squares do.
- Oh.
- And so this is actually a rhombus.
- [Blueberry] Oh, okay.
- Yeah, a rhombus.
- That makes sense.
- Yeah, okay.
So we only have, it looks like two little pieces at the bottom.
It's the same shape, and it's got a top and a bottom that are parallel to each other.
It comes down that at a slant.
So if I put it in here, that's actually a trapezoid.
- [Blueberry] Oh, okay.
- A trapezoid.
And look, Blueberry, we finished our puzzle.
- Oh, we did it!
- That was great.
And thank you so much for joining us today, and we'll see you again real soon.
- Let's do another.
- Okay.
