I am so excited you're joining me for more fun and learning with Arkansas PBS Rise and Shine.
I've been out working in my garden this morning and you would not believe what I found when I was digging in my carrots and my potatoes.
It looks like Frisbee has been busy burying bones in my garden, and it looks like he's even written some words on those bones for us to read.
I know that there are different syllable types, so maybe we can sort these words into their syllable types and that might help us decode them.
Now let's review the syllable types.
Our first syllable type is called a closed syllable word, and that's where you have a consonant, a vowel, and then another consonant.
The vowel is in between two consonants.
And anytime you see this, it's a closed syllable.
And you say the short vowel sound.
Now an open syllable word has a consonant and a vowel, and the vowel is the last letter in that word.
That means it's open.
It's not closed by another consonant.
That time you say the long vowel sound, a vowel consonant e syllable word has a vowel, a consonant, and then an E on the end.
We sometimes call these magic E words, that E makes that other vowel say its long sound and you don't make a sound for the E. A vowel team syllable word has two vowels that work together, and sometimes these say a long vowel sound, or even they make up a brand new vowel sound together.
An R-controlled syllable word has a vowel plus an R. And the R changes that vowel sound.
I call these pirate words because that R is a little bit bossy, and it really likes to make that vowel sound different.
Like it makes an a say arrrr!
And a final consonant - le word has a consonant plus le on the end and the E is silent.
Now let's dig in and see what words Frisbee gave us to decode on his bones.
Uh, let's see.
I think I found one here.
All right, let's dust that off.
I have a word.
That's c-l-o-c-k. Hmm.
I see the vowel here, and it's in the middle, and it's followed by two consonants.
That means that this is a closed syllable and the vowel is going to make its short vowel sound.
So let's sound this one out.
kuh, ll, ah, kuh.
Clock.
All right.
I think I've got another one right here.
I do.
And this one's a short word.
S-h-e, the vowel is at the end of this word.
So that means it's open, and the vowel says its long sound.
I also know that s and h together are a digraph and they make the sound of sh.
So let's sound this one out.
Sh, ee, she.
All right, let's see if I can find another one of these bones.
K-i-t-e. Now I see a vowel right there in the middle, and then it's followed by consonant, T, and then it's got an E on the end.
That's that magic E that makes this a vowel consonant.
E Syllable.
And that I is going to make its long I sound.
Let's decode this one.
Kuh, eye, tuh.
And the E doesn't it make a sound because it's magic, remember?
Kuh, eye, tuh.
Kite.
This word is kite.
All right, our next bone.
This one is p-a-r-k I see an A and an R right there in the middle of this word.
And that makes it an R controlled syllable, which means the vowel makes a different sound.
The A is not going to say it's a or even it's ay sound, that R is quite bossy and it makes that a say a different sound.
It's going to say arrr, kind of like a pirate sound.
Let's decode this one.
But ah.
Puh, arr, kuh.
Park.
This word is park.
Our next bone has g-o-a-t.
I see two vowels right in the middle of this word.
That means it's a vowel team and that O and the A are working together to make a sound.
This time they're going to make the long o sound.
Guh, oh, tuh.
Goat.
All right.
I think we have one last bone in here.
This one is b-u-b-b-l-e. Hmm.
This one sure is tricky.
I see u followed by b-b-l-e. What do you guys think this one is?
I agree.
I think it's a final consonant l-e because the b's are followed by that l-e. That means it's going to make a short vowel sound and the E at the end is silent.
Let's sound it out.
Buh, uh, buh, bl, bubble.
Awesome job, whew.
Decoding all those words sure is hard work.
And I really need to get back to my garden.
I may need to go build a fence to keep Frisbee out so I don't keep finding these silly bones everywhere.
