I'm Tucker Saum.
- And I'm Magnolia Saum.
Today, we'll be reading "Hello, Can I Bug You?"
by Sherry Roberts.
- [Tucker] Illustrated by Marta Taylor.
- [Magnolia] Briella watched Jasper on the playground every day.
Jasper wore thick black glasses and wrinkled gloves.
He liked to study bugs.
The other kids made fun of Jasper.
Briella knows kids make fun of people who are different.
He was so quiet.
- [Tucker] Briella spent recess on the swings and loved books.
She was quiet like Jasper.
- [Magnolia] Briella thought Jasper needed a friend.
She understood how hard it was to make friends.
It was hard for her too.
- [Tucker] Briella watched him until one day she felt brave.
She said, "What did you find?"
- [Magnolia] Jasper looked at her, and then back at the bug.
- [Tucker] Want a gummy?
- [Magnolia] Jasper shook his head.
- [Tucker] Briella thought, "How can I get Jasper to be friends?"
- [Magnolia] The next day, Briella brought a book about bugs.
"This one's for you."
- [Tucker] "I have that one."
- [Magnolia] "Okay."
Briella sat on the swing.
"Want to swing with me?"
- [Tucker] "No."
- [Magnolia] "Want a gummy?"
- [Tucker] No.
- [Magnolia] Briella thought hard.
How else can I get Jasper to be my friend?
- [Tucker] After school, Briella searched her yard for a bug that wasn't too gross.
- [Magnolia] She saw a worm, but yuck.
- [Tucker] There was a grasshopper, but she couldn't get it in a box.
- [Magnolia] Finally, Briella found a ladybug.
Maybe he would like that.
- [Tucker] At recess, Briella looked for Jasper.
"I found this for you."
- [Magnolia] Jasper looked inside.
"It's a dead bug."
"No, it's a ladybug."
Briella peered inside.
"It was okay when I put it in there."
- [Tucker] Jasper smiled.
- [Magnolia] Briella smiled too.
As she sat on the swing, maybe Jasper was going to be her friend.
- [Tucker] The next day, Briella saw something in her cubby.
She looked inside.
Chocolates?
- [Magnolia] There was a note.
"You like gummies, so I ate the chocolates.
Will you be my friend?"
Jasper.
- [Tucker] Briella looked behind her and saw Jasper.
His face was as red as the dead ladybug.
Briella gave him a nod.
- [Magnolia] During recess, Briella asked, "Want a gummy?"
"Sure."
Jasper ate the gummy as he looked for bugs.
- [Tucker] Briella sat on the swing and smiled at her new friend.
The end.
