Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Hello, I'm Tucker Saum, and today I'm going to be reading "Storm Bugs" by Andrea Zoppo, illustrated by Jordan Ososki.
"The day starts so bright.
Bugs of all kinds explore and take flight.
There are bees buzzing in the flowers and butterflies dancing in the sky, but the cloud spring showers and soon it will be hard to fly.
On the horizon the clouds go very dark.
In the cooling air, there's a fluttering monarch.
The leaves wave and call for rain.
The ants march undercover like a chain.
Moving fast, like a red flash, a shiny ladybug makes a dash.
Under a big leaf to avoid the storm other bugs huddle there to keep warm.
The honeybees knew today would be wet so they stay in their hive to avoid the threat.
Maybe they hold elections about their favorite food, cuddling together and nursing their brood.
Though there's rain, mosquitoes don't care, they'll ride the rain drops in midair.
The wind picks up when the rain drops fall.
Happy frogs hop and begin to call.
Frogs and toads like the rain.
They meet friends and explore terrain.
Turtles and tortoises enjoy the wet weather, meeting up by beaches or ponds to be together.
But when lightning cracks, thunder booms and trees sway, bugs hustle and bustle to find a place to stay.
Though storms seem scary; bugs enjoy these special times.
It could be the big purpose of their light time.
A big leaf magnolia presents a good spot for a dragonfly and a ladybug with six dots.
Under a poplar leaf, the butterfly perches.
Nearby lacewings hide in the birches.
Gleaming silver, water drips and drops like a gentle dance, down tall trunks and from tree tops.
There is a sway and a joy from all nature.
From shiny leaves, thirsty roots, and mini creatures.
The pitter patter of the rain begins to slow.
You can almost hear the plants and trees grow.
As the air clears, little bugs and crawlies come out to play.
The rollie pollies, snails and slugs have a field day.
The storm bugs rejoice for the world is wet.
Although there was a storm, there was no need to fret.
Drops sparkle on the leaves and the sun peaks out.
The storm bugs are happy as they emerge from their hideouts.
The day ends in golden light.
Bugs of all kinds shake off the rain and prepare for a good night.
