Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Good morning my dear, sweet, beautiful, brilliant students of Arkansas.
Today we are gonna investigate, and explore how light moves through different materials.
Have you ever thought about how light moves?
Yeah, me neither, well, not before today, so come a little closer and let's learn together.
We need light for our eyes to see, light is all around us.
We get light from windows, from lamps, even from iPads and TVs.
Now, let's investigate how it moves.
I have three objects here.
This is Harry, and I have a mirror, and I have a piece of glass.
So I want you to think about what will happen when I shine this flashlight on each object, do you think the light will go through it?
Do you think the light will be reflected, or bounce off of it?
Or will a shadow be created?
A shadow happens when light can not go through an object but some light goes around it making a shadow.
Have you ever been walking down the street, or on the playground, and noticed a dark image shaped like you but it looks like it's coming from your feet?
That's your shadow.
I like it when my shadow is long because it makes me feel taller, and like a hero, dah, dah, dah.
(Stacey laughs) All right, let me stop being silly, let's get back to the lesson.
Let's start with Harry.
What do you think will happen when I shine this light on him?
Will it go through him?
Will it be reflected?
Or will it create a shadow?
I don't know.
Here we go.
Lights off.
A shadow was created.
That means the light did not go through Harry it went around it.
Let's investigate some more.
Lights on.
This time let's check out how light moves with the mirror.
What's your prediction, will the light go through it?
Will it be reflected?
Or will it create a shadow?
I don't know but let's find out.
Do you see anything happening?
Ah, there it is, you see the light?
It's reflecting, it bounced, and it's right here on Africa.
Okay, last question.
If you had to guess what would you say the light is gonna do when I point this flashlight at this piece of glass?
Hmm, let's find out.
Lights off.
Wow!
The light went right through it.
Lights on.
So today we've learned that light is all around us.
It can be reflected, it can go through some things, or it can create shadows for the things it can not go through.
I challenge you to investigate how light moves in your home.
Ask your parents if you can use the flashlight, and if they say yes make animal shadows on the wall with your hand like this.
Well, that's it for today, I hope you have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day.
See you later.
