Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning my dear sweet, beautiful, brilliant students of Arkansas.
Today, we are going to investigate and explore why people build things to protect themselves from weather elements.
Raise your hand if you've ever been to or seen a beach on TV or in a book.
Have you ever noticed those really big umbrellas that people sit under when they're in the sand?
Or maybe you've seen a similar umbrella on a patio or in the backyard.
Why do you think people sit under them?
Yeah, because they provide shade and they block the sun.
Can you think of some other things that provide shade?
Yeah.
All of those are correct.
Trees, hats with a brims, sunglasses, buildings, gazebos.
Gazebos?
Wait, you guys know what a gazebo is?
A gazebo, not only provides shade, but it's a structure that also provides shelter from different types of weather, like the ice gazebo in "Frozen".
That one protected Queen Elsa from the falling snow.
Now, most of us here in Arkansas will never have a need for an ice gazebo, but we may need a tent if we go camping.
Can you think of why we would want to take a tent, which is like a gazebo with cover or fabric all around it?
Why we would want to take that at camping?
That's right.
To keep the bugs out and to protect us from the rain or cold.
Today, instead of building a snowman like Elsa wanted to do, or putting up a camping tent, we're gonna make a tent out of this paper to help shade this ice.
So in order to do it, we're just going to make a hamburger and we'll make another hamburger.
And we're gonna put it on top of the ice.
Do you think it will work?
Let's see.
(clock ticking) (clock dings) Well, the ice still melted, but I wonder what we could have done to improve the tent or to create a real shelter that would have protected the ice cube?
What do you think?
Do you have any suggestions?
I challenge you to make at least two shelters of your own and see which one protects the ice cubes the longest.
Be sure to take pictures and let me know which one works best.
All right.
Well, that's a wrap.
See you all later.
