Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Good morning, my dear, sweet, beautiful, brilliant students of Arkansas.
Today, we're going to investigate and explore patterns that we see in the day and night sky.
Let's look at this picture together.
What are some things you notice?
Yeah, it looks like the same place.
clouds, stars, the sun.
One side is day and one side is night.
Good job.
All right, so let's start off by talking about the daytime.
What is something you do outside during the daytime?
That's right, we play outside, we swim, we can have a picnic.
What's in the sky during the day that makes these things easier to do than during the nighttime?
Right again, it's the sun.
The sun gives us light and heat during the day.
Now let's talk about the night.
We're still able to do some of those things outside during the night too, but we usually must make sure that a light is around.
During the nighttime, the moon reflects light from the sun, which is how we can see it.
The moon doesn't give off its own light.
Did you know that?
Let me restate that.
The moon does not give off its own light, it reflects light from the sun, reflects light, reflect.
Hmm.
I know that word from somewhere.
Oh yeah, reflect means to bounce back.
Stars can also be seen in the sky at night.
Something that might be in the sky during daytime or nighttime are clouds.
They are much easier to see during the daytime, but we can sometimes see them in the sky during the night as well.
So, the next time you are outside, pay attention to all the objects in the sky.
Pretend like your mind and your eyes are a camera.
Look around and capture mental pictures of everything that you see, then go home and draw it.
And if your parents give you permission, see if you can go back outside that night to take more pictures with your mind's eye.
Once you get back inside, draw a picture of the night sky and show us what it looks like, then compare the two drawings.
I'm gonna put the finishing touches on my daytime drawing of my backyard.
I think I just need to add the trampoline and maybe some flowers.
So what'd you think?
I think I'm gonna give it to my mom and ask her to put it on her refrigerator next to one of my old report cards.
Don't laugh, I know I'm old as dirt, but I still like for my artwork to be on display.
All right, I'll see you later.
Have a good day.
