Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, my dear, sweet, beautiful, brilliant students of Arkansas.
Today we're going to investigate and explore how water exists on earth in a variety of locations, including ice, oceans, lakes, and ponds.
Did you know that 75% of the earth is covered by water?
It is.
Look at this globe.
All these places are oceans, lakes and water.
Now take a second and think about all the places where you have seen, or can get water from.
Where are some of them?
(toilet flushing) (laughs) You're so silly.
I'm not gonna say toilet on television.
But yeah, those are some good ones.
From the sink, the bathtub, pools, and yeah, you're right.
We even get water from puddles after the rain.
We can also find water from ponds and lakes and rivers and oceans.
Now that we have water on our mind, let's talk about all the places you can find water on earth.
Water on earth can be classified into two groups, salt water, and fresh water.
Salt water actually has this grainy salt in it, but fresh water is not salty.
If you look at this globe closely, you'll see that there are five oceans that are all connected.
Oceans are large bodies of salt water that cover most of the earth.
Since the oceans are saltwater, that means that we cannot drink from them.
I wish you could see this globe a little better, but around in this area, that's where icebergs are.
So icebergs in this area are simply solid water, which means that it is frozen water.
Icebergs are made of fresh water.
Now, lakes and rivers and streams and ponds, those are places where water can be found all around the earth.
Rivers, ponds and streams are fresh water, which means that they like icebergs, are not salty.
Most lakes are fresh water, but some have salt water.
One of the better known salt lakes is the Great Salt Lake of Utah.
Okay, so let's recap.
Over 75% of the earth is covered with water.
There are two types of water, freshwater and saltwater.
And oceans are saltwater, which means that they are not drinkable.
An iceberg is solid, or frozen fresh water.
And rivers, streams, ponds, and most lakes are also fresh water.
Whew, excellent job today.
I challenge you to teach someone about the bodies of water that we talked about today.
Better yet, do some investigating, and find out all about the bodies of water near where you live and the water all around Arkansas.
All right.
That's it.
I hope you have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day.
See you later.
