Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, my dear sweet, beautiful, brilliant students of Arkansas.
Today, we're going to investigate and learn about how plants and animals depend on their surroundings to meet their needs.
Now, I'm gonna really need your help today.
Do you think you can play along with me?
Okay!
Well, close your eyes and pretend like you have been outside playing.
It's sunny and hot, and you've been running around playing your favorite game.
For me, it used to be hopscotch.
Now, all of a sudden you feel thirsty.
Your mouth is dry and you can tell that you need some water.
As you run inside, you pass a flower that is wilted or droopy, which means it needs water too.
Now, open your eyes.
Raise your hand if you already knew that just like you, all live in things including flowers and trees have needs to survive too.
Let's look at a few of these items.
Some of these are the needs of living things.
That means that to survive, a living thing needs it.
Living things are things that grow and change.
They take in or make food and use it.
They also reproduce.
Let's go through what you need first.
Look at these items, see if you can pick out your needs.
What do you need to survive or to stay alive?
If you picked out the water, food, air, and the habitat or house, you got it right.
These are things that you need to survive or stay alive.
The toy and book, well, those might be considered a want.
These things make life more enjoyable or fun, but you don't need them to stay alive.
Now, let's look at these items and pick out the needs of a plant.
What does a plant need to survive or stay alive?
Yeah, (chuckles) if you picked out the water, air, sun, and soil, you got it right.
Plants make their own food using air, water, and sunlight.
And while you might have some plants in your house, plants do not need to have a house to survive.
At the beginning of our lesson, we were imagining we were outside playing and got hot, tired, and thirsty.
On our way to get some water, we saw that a flower was drooping and wilting.
Why was the flower drooping?
What did it need?
That's right.
It needed water just like you did.
Today, we've talked about a lot of things that you and plants need to survive.
Some were similar which means the same and some were different which means that they were not the same.
Take out your paper and pencil and draw a line down the middle.
On one side write same and on the other side write different.
Make a list of ways that human needs are the same and different from plant needs.
Then, share this list with your parents.
They'll be so impressed by how much you know.
I know I am.
Okay!
Have an absolutely great day and I'll see you next time.
Bye!
