(upbeat music) - Good morning Arkansas students and families!

This is Meghan Ables back with you again this morning, so that we can keep learning.

And today we're going to learn how to use a map with a key to find directions, to get me to summer school!

Because we have to get to summer school.

In fact, my kids are there right now and we've got to get there to them because I love my kids.

So we're going to start by looking at the key.

So if you notice, on the top here we have what's called a compass rose.

And the compass rose helps us to know our cardinal directions.

So N is for North, E is for east, S is for South, W is for west.

And sometimes we don't go straight north or straight south.

Sometimes we might go in-between and that would be Northeast, or sometimes we might go in between those and that would be Southeast.

And I'm actually from Southeast Arkansas, Then we'll have a symbol that'll look like a railroad track.

And that means we're going to go over the railroad.

Next, we'll have the water.

And that will be a bridge.

And notice when we get to the bridge, we have to make sure it's not icy, because bridges get slippery.

On the stop sign, you'll see the symbol of a stop sign and the trees you'll see will be at the park, but there will be no time to stop and play today at the park because we've got to get to summer school.

So let's get started on our map.

X marks the spot, and that's where we're gonna start today on our journey to summer school.

So as we pull out, we're gonna need to turn, right.

So look at our compass rose and tell me what direction are we gonna go?

That's right.

We're gonna go north.

So we're gonna turn and go north.

We're gonna come to a cross-section here and we're gonna need to go left.

So if we go left, let's use our compass rose.

We'll be going west.

Once we go a little ways west, notice this symbol.

Let's look over and remember, what are we gonna do?

We're gonna cross the bridge.

So we're gonna cross over the bridge.

Now, if it's icy, you better think twice or go slow 'cause you have to be careful on bridges.

Then we're gonna go over and come and I see another symbol here.

And remember what we talked about when we see a stop sign.

So girls and boys, what are we gonna need to do when we get to the stop sign?

We're gonna stop.

We're gonna wait.

We're gonna look right.

We're gonna look left.

We're gonna look right again, and then we're gonna turn right.

And then what direction are we gonna be going?

We're gonna be going north.

Once we get to this symbol, what are we gonna need to do?

Cross over the railroad tracks.

And if you're on the school bus, you know your bus driver's gonna open the door and listen to make sure no trains coming.

Then we're gonna keep going.

We're gonna get to a Y and we're gonna merge right?

And then what direction are we gonna be going?

We're gonna be going East.

And we haven't been going east yet this time.

We're going to pass by the church, the real big church with a steeple, We're gonna keep going and what are we gonna see on the right?

The park.

We're gonna keep going 'cause we don't have time to stop.

And we're gonna come to our stop sign, stop and look and turn left, which will be north.

And guess what?

We have arrived to summer school.

We're gonna keep learning about maps and all the great things there is to learn.
