I know your room is bigger.
- No, it's not Hayden.
- Yes it is, if we traded, I've had room for my drum set.
- And I wouldn't have room to practice dance for the dance team.
- Are you saying your room's bigger?
I say since I'm older, I should have the bigger room.
- Whatever Hayden.
- Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Cut this out.
What is all this fussing about?
- Hayden is saying that because he's older he should have the biggest room.
But I'm saying, my room isn't even bigger.
They're the same size, they're just different shapes.
- I think we should just do the math and see.
- Oh, I think doing the math is a great idea.
Hey, good morning mathematicians.
I bet you can help us with this problem.
I think the best way to end this little sibling argument we have going is to calculate the area of both their bedrooms and compare the answers.
Hey, let's review how to solve for area before we get started.
So Hayden and Hallie both have bedrooms that are shaped like a rectangle.
To find the area of a rectangle, you measure the length and the width and then multiply those numbers together.
Okay, are we ready to solve this problem?
- Wait, we're counting the closets, right?
- Oh, really good point.
We probably should consider the closets too.
So then really this math problem is about comparing composite shapes.
Composite just means multiple shapes put together.
So yes, we'll add your closets, which are rectangles too.
Hey, let's look at the blueprint of our house and calculate the areas.
Hayden's bedroom is 14 feet long and 11 feet wide.
His closet is five feet long and four feet wide.
Hallie's bedroom is 10 feet long and 15 feet wide.
Her closet is eight feet long and three feet wide.
So let's start with Hayden's area.
Now remember, the formula for area is length times width.
So that's 14 feet times 11 feet, which gives us 154 square feet.
For the closet, area equals five feet times four feet, for a total of 20 square feet.
Now let's calculate Hallie's area.
For her bedroom, we'll use the area formula again, length times width, so area equals 10 feet times 15 feet for a total of 150 square feet.
And for her closet, the area is three feet times eight feet for a total of 24 square feet.
So Hayden, you have 154 plus 20, that's 174 square square feet.
And Halle, you have 150 plus 24, also 174 square feet.
174 equals 174.
So kiddos, you have equal space.
Hey, great job mathematicians.
I'm glad we laid this argument to rest.
I want to challenge you to measure a room where you live and calculate the area.
We hope that you have a great day and we will see you next time on Rise and Shine.
You all say bye.
- Bye.
- See ya.
