I'm so glad you were joining me this morning on "Rise and Shine", because today we are going to learn how to round numbers to different places.
Being able to round is a very important skill, because it can let you simplify things and be more efficient.
Now, to help us with this lesson I have something really fun.
Check out this raffle drum.
I'm going to spin it until we have six numbers to work with.
Okay?
Are you ready?
Here we go.
(raffle drum grinding) One, two, three, four, five, six.
Okay, let's see what we have here.
You know what I need for us to use these for a number?
I need my chalkboard.
Chalkboard, chalkboard.
Awesome.
Okay, let's see what numbers we drew and get 'em up on the board.
Our first number is a four.
Second number is a one.
Third number is a nine.
Fourth number is a seven.
Fifth number is a two.
And our last number is a six.
Okay, can you read this number with me?
419,726.
So before we start rounding, let's review the steps.
We could round to different places, the tens or the hundreds, but the first step is to find your place.
Then remember, we have a rhyme for this.
Find your place and look next door.
If that's four or less, let it rest.
If it's five or more, let that number soar.
So when you look next door if the number to the right is four, three, two, one or zero let the number rest where it is.
But when you look next door if the number to the right is five, six, seven, eight or nine let the number soar up to the next number.
All right, let's round this number to the hundreds.
So first, find our place, ones, tens, hundreds.
We have a seven.
Then look next door.
Is this four or less, or five or more?
Two is less than four.
So we are going to let our seven rest and then remember everything to the right of that number gets replaced with a zero.
So our new rounded number to the hundreds place is 419,700.
Mathematicians, I hope you had fun with us on "Rise and Shine" learning more about rounding numbers.
Make today a great day and I'll see you next time.
Bye.
