Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, mathematicians!
We are about to have a fantastic time on "Rise and Shine" with a game of tic-tac-toe.
I have two special guests with me today, Zoe and Jonathan.
Welcome.
Are you all excited to play?
- [Both] Yeah.
- Yes, awesome!
Before we start, let's quickly review the three forms that we can use to express numbers.
Today we're focusing on decimals.
So my example is the number 0.542.
The first form is standard form, and it looks like this.
0.542.
Standard form is how we typically write numbers.
The second form is expanded form, and it looks like this.
0.5 + 0.04 + 0.002.
Standard form lets us see the place value of each number.
So here we have 5/10, 4/100, 2/1000.
The final form is word form, and it looks like this.
Five hundred forty-two thousandths.
Word form spells the number out.
Okay, so, you two, here are the rules.
I will name a number and a form, and you will quickly write that number on your dry erase board.
If your answer is correct, you'll place a token on the tic-tac-toe board.
When you complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal row, yell, "tic-tac-toe!"
Are you all ready?
- Yes.
- All right, let's go.
Use expanded form to write the number 917,000ths.
(playful music) - [Susanna] Okay, show your boards.
Yes!
Zoe, where would you like your X?
- Second row, far left.
- Second row, far left.
Jonathan, where would you like your O?
- Third row, far left.
- Third row, far left.
Awesome.
Okay, you ready for the second challenge?
Use standard form to write the number 38,000ths.
(playful music) Show your boards.
That was quick.
Yes!
Awesome job Zoe, where would you like your X?
- First row, far left.
- First row, far left.
Jonathan, where would you like your O?
- Third row, far right.
- Third row far right.
Okay.
Here's your third challenge.
Use word form to write the number 7,200ths.
(playful music) It's looking good!
(playful music) Oh, they're writing furiously.
Are we ready?
Show your boards!
Yes!
Okay.
Zoe, where would you like your X?
- Middle.
- Right in the middle.
Jonathan, where would you like your O?
- Third row, middle.
- Third row middle.. (gasps) Jonathan, is there something you'd like to yell?
- Tic-Tac-Toe!
(audience applauds) - Yes!
Congratulations.
You both did awesome today.
Mathematicians, I hope you had fun with us on "Rise and Shine" learning about decimal number forms.
We will see you next time.
You all want to say bye?
- [All] Bye!
