Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
I am Trey Suskie, And today we will be exploring how different characteristics help living things survive.
What are those types of characteristics called?
Hmm.
Yes!
This is called an adaptation.
An adaptation is a change or the process of change by which an animal or species becomes better suited to its environment.
This is very important for helping living things survive.
What are some animal adaptations that you can think of?
Hmm.
What about animals that use webbed feet?
Yes!
Otters and ducks have webbed feet to help them swim.
How about sloths and anteaters?
They have body adaptations that allow them to climb trees and eat bugs.
An anteater has a long nose, and sloths have long fingernails.
These animals will also disguise themselves either to help them eat or keep them from being eaten.
What are some other types of adaptations?
Hmm.
Good, students!
Some living things have armor, such as turtles, armadillos, and crabs!
These animals all have some type of exterior armor to protect against predators.
What about the humps on a camel?
These are for survival from the environment.
Camels develop water storage in their bodies to help survive the hot desert climate.
Other animals that adapt to their climates includes polar bears and seals.
They have fur and blubber to keep them warm in the Arctic climate.
So let's take a look at a few.
Can you tell me which animal would have a shell?
Hmm.
Let's think about that.
Very good.
The crab.
All right.
What about the adaptation of long snouts?
Hmm.
Very good.
The anteater.
All right.
That's great, guys!
What about out an animal that has an adaptation of blubber?
This is going to keep them warm when it's super cold.
What do you guys think?
Very good.
The seal.
Man, that was a great job, guys.
Awesome.
Can you think of other adaptations?
Hmm.
What do you think?
Ask an adult to help you brainstorm some of your own examples.
What will you come up with?
Thank you for tuning in, students and have a fantastic rest of your day.
