Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
I am Trey Suskie, and I will be teaching you a super social studies lesson.
So be sure to pay attention.
In today's lesson, we will be examining changes in society due to cause and effect.
Now let's get started.
What is cause and effect?
Hmm?
Cause is the act of something happening and the effect is the result of that action or event that has happened.
Here is an example of cause and effect in our society.
Before people could travel, they would have to stay close to rivers and lakes.
People chose to live near bodies of water to have more access to water, and it also helped their crops grow.
They couldn't travel very far on foot or even horse if they were lucky.
Now think about how we move around today.
We can drive or ride in cars and other vehicles, vroom.
Now look at my whip.
Oh, check this thing out.
Because of these vehicles, we can travel further than we could before they were invented.
So the cause would be the invention of transportation vehicles, and the effect would be people can now travel and live further.
Are you guys starting to understand cause and effect a little more?
Good!
Another great example of cause and effect in our society, would be the way we have access to information.
Before the internet was as popular as it is now, the library was the main source of our information.
That is where we would read books, along with magazines and very limited use of the internet.
So (indistinct) this book here... All right.
Okay.
I did not know that.
All right.
Let me just look that up really quick.
(playful music) Oh wow.
So since computers, phones, televisions, and anything else that has the internet has been created, many of us are able to access data right at our fingertips.
(phone ringing) Oh, whoa.
Hey, Mom, I'm actually shooting a segment for Rise and Shine right now.
Can I call you back in just a minute?
All right, great.
I love you too.
Okay.
All right.
So the cause would be technology becoming more accessible, and the effect would be that it's easier to look up things we don't know or what we want to know.
So ask an adult about getting a library card.
This is a great way to get information and see how things from the past can still be useful today.
Now there are many ways that you can get that library card, either by going on the internet with an adult and signing up, or even just going to the library itself with an adult, and you should easily be able to get that library card.
But due to more people having access to the internet via their phone or their own home computers, less people visit the library.
That could also be a cause and effect.
While you're at home, try to think of other cause and effects that have changed how you live or going on around you.
Thank you for tuning in, Rise and Shiners.
And I hope you have learned a lot today.
Have a fantastic rest of your day.
