Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
I am Trey Suskie and today we will be investigating what happens to plants and animals when their environment changes.
What are environmental changes?
Yes, these are all under climate change.
How does climate change affect plants and animals?
Great job.
It can alter the life cycles of plants and animals.
What might altering these life cycles look like?
For plants, this means that as temperatures get warmer, they are growing and blooming earlier in the spring and surviving longer into the fall.
For animals, this can affect how long some are hibernating by shortening that time and also changing the migration patterns of some animals.
Let's think about these definitions.
Hibernation is the time for animals or plants to sleep or save energy.
And migration is the movement of animals from one place to another, usually due to temperature change.
For plants and animals that need to live in a specific climate, these changes in temperatures and environment means that they may not have a place to live or survive.
This could mean some of them could become endangered or go extinct.
Endangered species is when there is not a lot of a certain plant or animal left.
And extinction is when that species of animal or plant is completely gone.
What are some examples of these changes happening now?
Good job, students.
Coral reefs are one of the most affected living things due to climate change.
What is a coral reef and why are they important?
They are living ecosystems that provide habitat for many oceanic species.
They also provide protection to the coastlines from massive storms and erosion.
How does climate change affect coral reefs?
Well, as the temperature gets warmer, it warms the oceans.
When this happens too quickly, it causes stress to the coral reefs and can cause what's called coral bleaching.
When coral bleaching happens, it can cause the coral reefs to die off.
How do you think this affects people?
Good.
It can cause a loss of habitat for ocean animals such as fish, crabs, clams and other animals.
This will also affect the food supply for people.
These are just a few examples of how climate change affects plants and animals in their environment.
What are some examples you can think of that affect you?
Ask an adult to help you investigate your ideas and see what else you can learn.
Thank you for tuning in students and have a fantastic rest of your day.
(upbeat music) More ways to show off what we know.
Let's show 'em.
Science and reading skills, math and art, color wheels.
Let's go to class.
It's a blast!
You're a great student so we know that you can do it.
Rise and shine.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
