Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) - Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
Today I'm with Tucker and we are going to be drawing conclusions about life in the past using artifacts.
Now, Tucker, can you tell me what an artifact is?
- An artifact is something from the past.
- All right.
Great job.
It's an object made by someone in the past.
Now, we have some artifacts here like this old camera and this old telephone called a rotary.
And I was hoping today we could look at a picture from the past and take a closer look to see if we can figure anything out about the picture.
- Yes, but wouldn't it be cool if we were in the photo?
- Wait, what do you mean?
- Like we were the photo.
Something like this.
(fingers snapping) (old time music) (projector running) - Whoa.
Well, I think I get it now.
Let's use this photo to draw conclusions about the past.
What is the first thing that you notice?
- The photo is black and white and there isn't any color.
- Right.
Good observation.
We are in black and white.
What else do you see, Tucker?
- We have different clothing on.
- Great.
Yes, we are wearing much different clothing than what we would wear today.
Right, it's easy to tell this clothing is from the past.
Is there anything else that you notice?
- It's not very clear and the picture is very grainy.
- All right.
Good eye to spot that one.
It was a bit tricky, but the photo was not very clear.
Let's review.
What conclusions have we drawn from the artifact that we looked at today?
What did you notice about the photo?
- It was black and white.
We had different clothing on and it was blurry and grainy.
- All right.
Yes, very good.
The style of clothing is very different than anything we might wear today.
Also, the technology of taking photos was not like it is today because it wasn't in color or as clear as photos we now have.
That was awesome, Tucker.
We sort of look like we are from the past too with these outfits on.
- Yeah, we really are.
- Yeah.
Now that we know about drawing conclusions from artifacts, you all watching at home can ask an adult to help you learn about artifacts you might have.
That is all the time we have today.
Thanks for learning with us.
