Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
Today, we are exploring ways that weather, climate and other environmental traits affect the lives of people in a place or region.
I just flew in from Alaska and boy, was it cold.
Alaska is much colder than it is in Arkansas most of the year.
Did you know during the winter months the temperature can get to -20 degrees at its coldest and produce over five feet of snow a year.
This is considered a sub Arctic climate.
However, its average temperature ranges from 45 to 75 degrees.
Alaska has large mountainous regions and wilderness as well.
Everyone talks about Mt.
Everest, but Mt.
McKinley, located in Alaska, is the tallest mountain in the U.S. And the cool thing about this state is that in northern Alaska, there isn't a consistent day or night like we have here in Arkansas.
From May to early August, there is 24 hours of sunlight, and from November to January, there is 24 hours of moonlight.
Wow.
In Arkansas, we experience a much warmer climate with summers averaging well above 90 degrees while in the winter, the low average is below 36.
Arkansas' climate zone is considered humid sub-tropical.
That is because we get lots of rain per month compared to other states in the north.
Arkansas also has different landscapes.
In the north, the state is very mountainous.
Have you ever heard of the Ozark Mountains?
What about the Delta?
In eastern and southern Arkansas, the environment is called the Delta.
These places are flat and close to rivers.
In Egypt, people experience hot summers, like in Arkansas, but it is much drier.
Temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 107 degrees, with the lows in the winter being much milder around 50 degrees.
Egypt also has lots of deserts.
A desert receives little rainfall and has lots of sand.
What's cool about Egypt is it has pyramids.
Pyramids are large triangular monuments that hold in artifacts about life hundreds of years ago.
Have you ever heard of mummies?
Some were found there.
Let's think about what kind of extreme weather occurs in each of these climates.
What do you think?
What extreme weather might occur in Alaska?
That's right.
Alaska experiences extreme winter weather like snow storms.
What about Arkansas?
What extreme weather is here?
That's right.
Tornadoes and other big storms.
Finally, think about Egypt.
Yes.
In the desert climate, we have sandstorms.
Thank you for tuning in, students and have a fantastic rest of your day.
(upbeat music) You're a great student so we know that you can do it.
Rise and shine.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
