Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
I am Trey Suskie and today we will be analyzing the influence of natural resources on where people settle in the United States and in Arkansas.
Can you think of some natural resources?
Right.
Water, trees, land and minerals are all great examples.
So what is a natural resource?
These are resources gained from nature that are used for profit by people.
One of the biggest influences on where people live is location.
Location, location, location.
There's an important question to think about.
What makes a location so important?
Hmm.
What do you think?
Yes.
Your home might be close to your school, or it could also have really fun things to do around it.
But what are some other reasons you can think of?
Of course, those natural resources.
The more natural resources that are within an area, the more people want to live there.
Hmm.
Can you think of some examples?
Good job.
Being close to water.
This is a big one.
Civilizations have been centered around major bodies of water like rivers, lakes and oceans for thousands of years.
Why would this be so important?
Yes.
Yes.
So they can have access to drinking water, transportation and the ability to grow crops.
Do you notice anything about this picture right here?
Yes.
Just like the Arkansas River.
Great job.
Now, what about minerals?
Can you think of when minerals have influenced where people live?
Yes.
The gold rush of 1849 to 1855.
Gold influenced around 300,000 people to move to California and the western United States.
These people were called the 49ers.
Now, did you know Arkansas has some amazing minerals as well?
Yes, we have diamond mines.
Many people settled in Arkansas to look for diamonds just like these.
Now, I don't know about you, but between the gold and the diamonds, what kind of things do you think you can buy with all of this stuff?
All right.
So think about this.
Think about where you live.
What do you think influenced people to live where you live?
Ask an adult to help you find out.
Thank you for tuning in students and have a fantastic rest of your day.
(upbeat music) Science and reading skills, math and art, color wheels.
Let's go to class.
It's a blast!
You're a great student so we know that you can do it.
Rise and shine.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
