Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) (jungle sounds) Good morning, Amazing students of Arkansas.
Do you know where we are today?
We are in the jungle, and today we will be learning about how plants and animals depend on each other, as well as their surroundings to meet their needs.
What are some ways that you know that plants and animals depend on each other and their environment?
Hmm.
That's right.
Plants depend on the sun for energy, and animals depend on plants or other animals for energy.
Plants are called producers, and animals are consumers.
Do you know what producers and consumers are?
Yes.
Great job.
Producers get energy from the sun and water to make their own food.
Consumers cannot do this, so they must eat producers and other consumers to get their energy.
Now that we've discussed producers, let's think about where they live.
Hmm.
That's right.
Plants and animals are all part of an ecosystem or habitat.
An ecosystem is the physical environment in which all organisms interact.
And habitats are the places that plants and animals live together to survive.
So how do you think plants and animals depend on each other?
Hmm.
That's it.
Plants and animals need each other not only for food, but also things like shelter.
And pollination for overall survival.
Now, besides meeting each other, what do plants and animals do themselves to survive?
Let's think about that.
Oh, yes, they adapt.
Let's think of ways these plants and animals can adapt to survive.
Take this chameleon, for example.
How could it adapt?
Hmm.
That's right.
It can use camouflage to hide itself from other animals or plants to hunt its prey.
What is a plant that could adapt for hunting prey?
Hmm.
One of my favorites is the Venus flytrap.
What is that?
You ask.
It is actually a plant that pretends to be normal, but will eat bugs and spiders for food.
Pretend that my hand is the plant.
It will allow them to land on its mouth disguised as a flower.
And then, boom, it chomps down and eats them.
Wow.
That's amazing.
What about a house plant?
What might we notice about how they adapt to their environment?
Have you ever noticed that when you put a plant in your house, it leans to wherever the light from the window is?
That is the plant adapting.
What are some other animals and plants you can think of that rely on and adapt to each other for survival?
Ask an adult to help you investigate these questions and see what else you can learn.
Thank you for tuning in, students, and have a fantastic rest of your day.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
