Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Good morning amazing students of Arkansas.
Whew, is it hot out here.
I don't know about you, but I'm really sweating out here today.
What are some some ways in which we can help with all this heat?
Whew, today we will be looking at solving the same problem in multiple ways.
Let's think about it.
Hmm.
Oh, yeah.
We definitely need some water.
Why do we think water is important to have when it's hot outside?
Yes.
To help keep hydrated.
It works like this.
If the body becomes too hot, water is lost through sweat.
And when this sweat evaporates or turns from liquid into a gas on our skin, it removes heat from the body.
So let's drink up.
Whew, better.
What can we do to protect ourselves from the sun?
Hmm.
Of course.
Sunscreen is a wonderful idea.
Why is it important?
It protects us from some of the harmful rays of the sun.
Have you ever had a sunburn?
Ouch.
Let's put some on.
Make sure to get all the exposed areas.
Rub it in real good.
Is there something else we can do to block the sun's rays?
Yeah.
A hat would be a great idea for extra protection.
Let's get it really quickly.
Okay, great.
Can you think of another way to cool down from the hot sun?
What about a cool towel or an ice pack?
This is good to cool down your core temperature.
Your wrists, neck and head are great places to cool down.
Look at this.
We have one right here.
Now, have you ever made a rice bag?
This is similar to an ice pack.
These are so awesome and easy to make.
I use one all the time.
Check it out.
Let's make one.
Open up my pillowcase.
Dump in the rice and boom.
It's right here.
We tie it up and we're done.
Now, you might ask, how does this work?
Well, once you make the rice bag, you can put it in the freezer or refrigerator and it will get really cold.
You can then put it on your head, neck or wrists to cool that, cool yourself down.
Wow.
That feels a lot better.
It's a scorcher out here.
Thank you for tuning in, students, and have a fantastic rest of your day.
More ways to show off what we know.
Let's show 'em.
Science and reading skills, math and art, color wheels.
Let's go to class.
It's a blast!
You're a great student so we know that you can do it.
Rise and shine.
Get up off your feet.
Ah, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
