And one of my favorite things to do is to take people on tours of the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden, right here in downtown Little Rock on the banks of the Arkansas River.
I know you know what a garden is, but have you ever heard of a sculpture garden?
Well, in this garden, we don't grow flowers.
We grow sculptures.
It is a beautiful place full of wonderful things to see.
When you think about art, I think most people think about painting.
Now, what is the main difference between a painting and a sculpture?
Paintings are flat, but sculptures are three dimensional.
A sculptor is an artist who must create a piece of art that can be seen from every angle.
Sculptures must show us movement using materials that never move, like steel, or bronze, or stone, and that can be a real challenge.
Let's look at this sculpture.
This sculpture is full of movement.
He is on the go, exploding with energy and movement.
And sculptors must show us emotions like being happy, or being sad, using the same hard materials.
This sculpture is called Bunny Bump.
And when you look at Bunny Bump, it is obvious that these little rabbits are having a blast.
Whenever I give a tour of the sculpture garden, I always show people this sculpture.
And I always ask the same question.
"What do you see?"
"And what do you feel when you look at this sculpture?"
Some people say, "I see a roller coaster."
or "I see a big yellow ribbon."
Some people say they see the musical symbol like the treble clef.
Well, which answer is correct?
Who's right?
Well, the right answer is, is that all the answers are correct, because you see art is not like math.
Math is objective.
And by that I mean that, in math there is usually one specific correct answer to a question.
2 + 2 is always 4.
5 x 5 is always 25, but art is not like that, art is subjective.
And by that, I mean there is not one specific correct answer to what you see, and what you feel, when you look at a sculpture or when you look at a painting.
Hey, let's play a game.
How many of you like to go on scavenger hunts?
I do.
Well, let's go on a mini sculpture scavenger hunt right now.
Can you show me a sculpture that shows eagerness?
Is it A?
Is it B?
Or is it C?
Well, if you said A, you're right.
This dog is so eager to jump off the platform and go, you feel if he moves just another half inch he's going to probably fall off into the water.
All right.
Let's try another one.
Which of these sculptures shows us a seed and beginning life?
Is it A?
Is it B?
Or is it C?
Okay, Okay, I know I made this one way too easy.
It is C. The white stone represents a seed or beginning life, but can you see that it looks like a drop of water?
Let's try one more.
Which sculpture shows us an artist that loves folded paper?
Is it A?
Is it B?
Or is it C?
If you said B, you're right.
This artist was fascinated by paper and he loved how paper could be folded into different shapes.
So he studied origami.
Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding.
And then he learned how to cast these origami shapes into bronze.
So he could make his paper sculptures into permanent sculptures.
Have you ever made a paper airplane?
If you have, you have made a simple paper sculpture.
Well, I've really enjoyed being with you today in the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden.
And I hope you've liked learning a little bit about sculpture and seeing some of the fun things we have down here.
And I want you to come back anytime, because we have so many more wonderful sculpture flowers just waiting for you to discover and enjoy.
Bye for now.
