(upbeat music) (birds chirping) (axe clunking) (upbeat music continues) (breath whooshing) - (panting) Hi everyone, today we're celebrating our Arkansas PBS Writer's Contest winners.
With us is our second place winner from the third grade, the great Henley Ritchie with the story she wrote and illustrated called, "S'more Camping."
Henley is nine years old and enjoys outdoor adventures such as going to the river and to the creek with her family and friends.
Now introducing the wonderful Henley Ritchie.
(audience cheers and applauds) - My name is Henley and this is, "S'more Camping with Nelly."
One day Nelly was sitting outside reading a good book when her parents called out, "Hop in the car, we have a surprise for you."
When they arrived at the destination Nelly realized they were camping at one of their favorite places, Crooked Creek.
As they were unpacking, Nelly saw another car pull up.
Inside were her best friends, the twins, Lizzy and Maye and their parents and they brought stuff to make s'mores.
Their dads took the girls fishing.
When they got back they noticed the graham crackers were gone.
"Oh no!"
said Lizzy, "what are we going to do?"
Everyone decided to go on a hike.
When they got back May said, "Oh no, the chocolate bars are missing.
What are we going to do?"
Since it was so hot out, the moms said, "let's go swim in the creek."
When they got back from swimming, Nelly said, "oh no, what are we going to do?"
The marshmallows were gone.
Just then the girls found a clue.
They found Graham cracker crumbs that led to chocolate bar wrappers, which led to a trail of marshmallows, which led them to their dads at the campfire.
Nelly noticed her dad had marshmallow stuck to his mustache.
Lizzy noticed her dad had crumbs in his beard.
And Maye noticed both of them had chocolate on their shirts.
The girls solved the mystery.
"Dad, it was you who took our s'mores," said the girls.
The dads said, "we needed something sweet to eat."
Just then their moms showed up with backups.
"Moms to the rescue," chanted the girls.
And the girls sat around the campfire with their family and finally made their s'mores.
The end.
(audience cheers and applauds) - Hello.
- Hi.
- Thank you for sharing your story with us, it was fantastic.
- Thanks.
- So like throughout the story we saw themes of like fishing and like camping, outdoorsy stuff, that's like a lot of the stuff that you like to do?
- Yeah, I really like to fish like at Crooked Creek and Buffalo and so I chose camping 'cause I love camping and I wanted to do something that I love.
- Very cool, and so s'mores can be made a variety of different ways, right?
You can have different chocolates, you can have it roasted, semi-roasted.
Henley, what is the perfect way to make a s'more?
How do you make a s'more?
- Roast the marshmallow 'til it's super duper burnt and then put two chocolates on one side of the graham cracker and the other and then squish it until all the goo comes out.
- Whoa, that sounds amazing.
Well, I love s'mores, I'm in the mood for s'mores.
Do you want to go make s'mores with me?
Awesome, let's do it.
I'm going to make a like double decker s'more.
Like really, really big, huge.
(upbeat music) (fire crackling) What did the marshmallows say to the chocolate bar?
- Mm, I don't know, what?
- I don't know either.
(both laughing) (upbeat music) - Is it amazing or what?
Rest in peace, my marshmallows.
- [Mister Andre] Yeah, the double deck idea was amazing.
Mm hm, like so so good.
(Henley giggling) (upbeat music) - [Children] "Gobbledy Book!"
