Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Hey Lucy, what's your favorite season of the year?
- Summer.
- And why is that?
- I love playing in the water.
- Well, I'm glad to hear that because we might get a little bit wet today.
I've got some typical summer items here and we're going to see if they will sink or float.
First, we have to make some predictions based on our observations.
- What's a prediction?
- Oh, well that just means what you think is going to happen.
So let's look at our items.
We've got rubber ducky, and apples and sunglasses and a water bottle.
So, which ones do you think will sink and which ones do you think will float?
How about the rubber duckies?
- Float.
- Okay, one check mark for float next to rubber duckies.
How about the apples?
- Sink.
- Okay, one check mark for sink next to apples.
Now, let's talk about the sunglasses.
What's your prediction?
- I think they will sink.
- Okay.
The sunglasses we think will sink.
We're going to put a check mark under sink for sunglasses.
And last but not least, our water bottle.
Do you think it'll sink or float?
- Float.
- Okay, we're going to put one check mark under float, next to water bottle.
Now, we have our predictions and it's time to test them.
Are you ready?
Okay, Lucy, let's start with the rubber duckies.
They float!
Was your prediction, correct?
- Mmmhmmm.
- It sure was.
So we're going to put an F for float, next to rubber duckies.
Okay.
How about the apples?
The apples float.
We said that the apples would sink, but they float.
How about the sunglasses?
Very good.
You said that the sunglasses would sink.
Let's record the outcome with an S. Very good, Lucy, let's try the water bottle.
It floats.
Your prediction was correct.
Let's mark it on our chart.
The water bottle floats.
Great job, Lucy.
Thanks so much for helping me with this test.
So what have we learned today, Lucy?
- We learned that we can record our predictions and they're not always right.
- That's very good.
Thank you so much, Lucy.
And scientists at home, I want you to think about how can you collect data about your predictions?
Can you predict what your family's going to wear tomorrow?
And then record your observations the next day.
The possibilities are endless.
Thanks for learning with us.
And remember, never stop exploring and never stop discovering.
