Welcome to Rise and Shine.
I'm Courtney Cochran, and we're going to learn about some social studies.
Today, we are talking about citizenship and rights.
Do you know what it means to be a citizen?
A citizen is someone who lives in and belongs to a certain place.
You know, my dad told me when I was growing up that I won the lottery the day I was born in this country.
Why do you think he said that?
I think he said it because I was born with a lot of rights in this country that some people in other countries don't necessarily have.
But with those rights come very important responsibilities.
You see rights are the things that we're free to do as citizens.
We're protected by the laws when we do those things.
And responsibilities, those are duties.
Those are things that we do to make our country run smoothly and be the best it can be.
You can kind of think of responsibilities like chores or the rules that you follow in your classroom.
Let's take some look at some examples of rights and responsibilities First, we have paying taxes.
Paying taxes is when we give money to the government to pay for the things that we all need, that we all benefit from, like schools and roads and bridges and firefighters and police officers.
So what do you think?
Is paying taxes something that's a right or is it a responsibility?
It's a responsibility.
It's a duty.
What about being protected by the law?
If something goes wrong, somebody takes something from you or something happens to you or your family, you are protected by the law.
Is that a right or a responsibility?
It's a right.
How about following the laws?
When you follow the rules and the laws, are you practicing a right or a responsibility?
It's a responsibility.
How about speaking your opinion?
You know, in our country, anyone can say whatever they want about the country and the way it's going, even about the government.
Is that a right or is it a responsibility?
It's a right.
Now, what about voting?
I bet you've heard a lot of people talking about this.
Is voting a right or a responsibility?
Voting is actually both.
Voting is a right that's protected by the United States Constitution.
So we're going to put a vote under rights.
But it's also a responsibility.
It's very important that all the United States citizens vote so that we can make sure our country runs smoothly and it's the best it can be.
I'm going to put this under responsibility as well.
Great job, you guys.
Thank you so much for joining me today to learn about rights and responsibilities I hope you have a wonderful day.
