Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning scientists, I'm Courtney Cochran and I've got another awesome science lesson for you today.
We've talked a lot lately about living things but planet earth has many more fascinating things on it.
Today we are talking about energy, specifically, renewable energy and non-renewable energy.
Renewable resources are raw materials that come from the earth and they can be replenished over time through ecological cycles or through sustainable management practices.
Non-renewable resources cannot be replenished.
They exist in limited supply.
We can get these energies from natural resources.
For example, I'm sure you've heard of solar power that comes from the sun and wind power that we can get through wind turbines and windmills and hydro power that comes from our rivers and lakes.
Let me show you what I'm talking about.
I've got my own little wind turbine here and if I blow hard enough on this, it's gonna light up this light bulb right here.
Let's see if I can do it.
(air blowing) Just by me blowing on this windmill right here, it gave enough energy to light up this little light, Wind, solar power and hydro-power are all renewable resources.
That means that over time they can be replenished.
There are other resources that give us energy that are non-renewable.
That means they can't be replenished.
Let's play a little game, I like to call it renewable or non-renewable.
I'm gonna list off some things, some natural resources and you tell me if you think it's renewable or non-renewable, ready?
Here we go.
How about corn?
It's renewable.
What about oil?
That's nonrenewable.
Can you tell me if you think coal is renewable or not?
Coal is not renewable.
What about sunshine?
That's right, it is renewable.
Are the tides renewable?
That's right, they are renewable.
What about trees?
We can plant new trees so those are renewable resources.
Is tuna renewable?
You might not like the taste of it but it is a renewable resource.
What about gold?
It is non-renewable.
You've done a great job with this activity.
What I want you to do is I want you to go on a walk with your family and see if you can list off all of the renewable and non-renewable resources that you see along the way.
Thank you so much for your help today scientists, you've done a great job.
I can't wait to see you next time but until then remember, never stop exploring and never stop discovering.
